orites, and the Pe rlzzltes, and the Hivltes, and the JebusitQs. 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians toppress them. 10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt. 11 And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? 12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain. LESSON T E X T : Ex. 3:1-12. GOLDEN T E X T : “Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the chil dren- of Israel out of Egypt" (Ex. 3:10). DEVOTIONAL READING: Psa. 106:1-5. Outline ond Exposition I. T h e A ppe aran c e to M oses (1-6) F ORTY years prior to the time oi people through his own wisdom and power. He had to learn that only utter dependence upon God could fit him, to accomplish the task he desired. When Moses led the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law to the backside of the desert one day, he probably had no thought that that da^ would bring a revolutionary change in his life, a promotion from tending sheep to leadr ing his people from the land of bond-' age. Suddenly he saw a bush burning without being consumed (vs. 2, 3), and he turned aside to examine it. The Lord spoke from the midst of the burning bush (vs. 4, 5). As Moses drew near, the Lord made Himself known, and as He did so, the very ground around b e c a m e holy. We sometimes think it is the obsence of certain things that creates holiness; it is rather the presence of a certain Person — the Lord Himself — that makes a place or a person holy. The One who spoke from the bush made Himself known as the God of the fathers (v. 6). He was the God of the unconditional promise to Abraham, the God who brought Isaac from the dead, and the God of sovereign grace who met with Jacob. Moses could step into the procession of those whom this living God chose. II. T h e A n n o u n c e m e n t to M oses (7-10) God declared His knowledge of the sufferings of His people (v. 7). He had seen their affliction, had heard their cry, and had known their sorrows. He knew all about them, as He knows all about each of His own today. And He announced His purpose to Moses, say ing that He had come down “to de liver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land . . .■ unto a land flowing

with milk and honey” ‘(v. 8). The Canaanites, Hittites, and others had forfeited their r i g h t s to that good land; their cup of iniquity was full to overflowing, and the God who at a later time said, “Vengeance is miné: I will repay” (Rom. 12:19) was about to bring deserved judgment. He would do this by driving these nations out and giving the land to His people, the Israelites. The later history clearly re veals God’s righteousness and impar tiality when He drove out Hig own people when they, too, went the way of these nations. God announced His purpose of using Moses as His agent in bringing the people out of Egypt and delivering them from the Pharaoh of Egypt (cf. vs. 9,10). It was not the merit of these children of Israel, but their utter need that brought God into the scene. And beyond the need of the people there were other considerations before God. The pride of Egypt must be humbled, and God’s superiority o v e r Egypt’s gods m.ust be revealed; the iniquity of the Amorites must be punished, and that in righteousness; Israel must be delivered, not only from Egypt but also fron\the idolatry of Egypt, and the whole world must have instruc tion concerning. the righteous char acter of God. III. T he A ssurance fo r M oses (11, 12) The task in view appeared too great for Moses, and he made objection. Who was he to go into the presence of the king and demand the release of a people whom that king had sworn to exterminate? Moses was called to face a human monster surrounded by the power of the greatest empire on earth. But» God gave the assurance, ‘‘Certainly I will be with thee.” Moses had but to remember who it was who made this promise. Remembering the paát history which revealed God’s divine character and p o we r , and having the promise of the presence o f , God, Moses could go to Pharaoh

withotit fear or doubt. Likewise the servant of Christ today may be assured of the truthfulness of the precious promise of the Lord tcf. Matt. 28:20; Heb. 13:5, 6). Points and Problems L 'The Angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flqme of fire out of the midst of a bush" (v. 2). It does not say that the bush was in the fire, but that the fire was in the bush. The picture, therefore, is of God in the midst of His despised and suffering people. The flame is the Lord’s pres ence, not a picture of Israel’s suffering and bondage in Egypt as has often been supposed.
