the most convincing argument of the gospel.” 2. To fulfill God’s plan (Tit. 2:14; Eph. 2:10). 3. To obey God’s command (Jas. 1:22; Tit. 2:7; 1 Cor. 15:58).y 4. To glorify God (Matt. 5:16). We must seek only God’s glory, whether we are doing little things which re ceive no recognition, or more notice able things which tempt us to accept praise for ourselves. Among the many oomments avail able on Matthew 5:16 is this from the Pulpit Commentary: “He is strong who seeks only the glory of the Lord. His light will shine before men; not with the fitful gleams that are of the earth, but with the calm, steady, holy light which comes from heaven. Men will feel its warmth; they will recognize •its truth, its reality. . . . It will lead them to the Lord.” II. HOW TO LIVE THE GOSPEL. • 1. Get right with God (Matt. 12:34). Good works can issue only from the fountain of a purified heart. 2; Study the source of strength and guidance—the Bible (2 Tim. 2:15; 3:16, 17; Heb. 4:12). 3. Pray the prayer Paul prayed for the Colossians (1:9-11). 4. Remember the challenge (1 Cor. 4:1, 2). An old Chinese proverb says: “ It takes little effort to watch the other feUow carry the load.” III. GIVE THE GOSPEL AT HOME. ■There are many ways of giving the \gospel at home: tracts, Gospel por-

JULY 18, 1943 THE CHRISTIAN ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY I sa ia h 6 :8 ; J am e s 2:20, 24, 26 By Velma B. Pickett Introduction ,“It has been said, and I find it true from personal experience, that it is easier to risk one’s*llfe on the battle field than it is to perform customary humble and humdrum duties, which, however, are just as necessary to win ning the war.” Spoken by Madame Chiang Kai- shek in the halls of the Congress of the United States, February 18, 1943, these words refer to the physical war fare in which China and the United States are engaged. But they picture also the n e c e s s i t y for day-by-day faithfulness which is the keynote to the Christian’s responsibility. The Christian is commissioned: The ability to live the gospel faith fully is priceless. For instance, we might cite Victor McAnney, a Chris tian man who really lived his message in the United States Navy. Vic went to be with the Lord when the U. S. S. Astoria went down, but many have come to “ know Christ through his death as well as through his life. Said one fellow seaman: “I thank God for the privilege of knowing Vic, for. his influence in my life in estab lishing me firmly on the pathway of Christ, and for his testimony of the Lord in word and deed. I know his life will still be shining through others, though he has gone to his Haven of Rest.” Impressed by that life, a skep tical Marine'was heard to say: “If I ever turn religious, it will be because of McAnney’s life.” The life is a powerful testimony. I. WHY LIVE THE GOSPEL? 1, To be consistent with our message (Rom. 14:13, 18; Tit. 2:7, 8 ). Some one has said, “Teaching is useless Unless it is enforced by the power of an holy example.” From T. Croskery we have this statement, "... . personal charac ter is the most eloquent counsel and 1. To LIVE the gospel. 2. To GIVE the gospel. F6r Those Who Have Topics
