THE K ING ’ S BUSINESS

ceaseless activity for Christ, without taking time off for much reading of God’s Word, with due meditation and prayer. Thus the spiritual life is starved, and there is no source of re newed strength. We should not be always dwelling in quietness; but more quietness and less work is better thah more work with less quietness, so far as the effectiveness of our labors for Christ is concerned. —F. L. French. 12. Preaching Chains “So that my bonds became manifest in Christ throughout the whole prae torian guard, and to all the rest” (Phil. 1:13, R. V.). What is our, attitude toward the troubles of life that seem to hold us in bondage?' Paul might have suiked in captivity and allowed his fetters to ^ilencd his testimony for Christ. But he conducted himself in such a way during his imprisonment that his chains were transformed into eloquent preachers of the truth of Jesus. Do we make the chains , of adverse- circumstances preach Christ? Un quenched ardor in witnessing for our Lord in time of trouble is bound to glorify the name of Christ and pro mote His cause in the hearts of men. .—Norman C. Bartlett. 13. Because of Adversaries “For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries. . . . Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong” (1 Cor. 16:9, 13). There are many adversaries, there fore I will tarry. The usual order is: There are many adversaries, and it is no good going on. There are many adversaries; we had better try another

track. There are many adversaries, and prudence is the 1 better ,part of valor. Thus the adversaries scare us away into bypath meadows, those enervating fields, where the only flowers are popples, and where a ruddy and boisterous health is never found.—J. H. Jowett. 14. Sacrifice of Heaven “He was wounded for our transgres sions, he was bruised for our iniqui ties: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isa. 53:5). Not all the blood of beasts On Jewish altars slain Could give the guilty conscience peace, Or wash away the stain: But Christ the heavenly Lamb Takes all our sins away, A Sacrifice of nobler Name And richer blood than they. •Bend the Head! “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of ail acceptation, that Christ Jesus camé into the world to save sin ners; of whom I am chief” (1 Tim. 1:15). Humbleness is peculiar to Christian ity. Goodness is admired and taught in all religions. But to be good and feel that your goodness is nothing; to advance and become more conscious of pollution; to ripen in all excellence and, like corn, to bend the head when full of ripe and bursting grain, that is Christianity.—Robertson. 16. Are We Profitable Servants? “A. disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his lord” (Matt. 10:24, R. V.L If God dismissed unfaithful serv ants, there would have been no preachers on the day of Pentecost. If God dismissed His unfaithful servants now, most of us would be permanently out of work. I wonder a great deal more at God’s patience with the saints. The grace that stoops to forgive a guilty sinner is wonderful, but the grace that stoops to use a servant who deserves dismissal is more wonderful still.— Alliance Weekly. 17. Time for God “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with, the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Rom. 8:18). Give God time, and even when the knife flashes in the air the ram will be seen caught in the thicket. Give God time, and even when Pharaoh’s host is on Israel’s heels a path through the waters will be sud denly open. Give God time, and when the bed of the broqk is dry Elijah shall hear the «•Mins voice.—F. W. Boreham, —Selected. 15.
