18. Love to Jesus “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35). The love which the early Christians felt toward the Lord was not a quiet emotion which they hid within them selves in the secret chamber of their souls, and which they only spoke of when they met on the first day of the week, and sang hymns in honor of Christ JesUs the crucified. But it was a passion with .them of such a vehe ment and all-consuming energy, that it was visible in their actions. It spoke in their common talk, and looked out of their eyes even in the commonest glances. Love to Jesus was a flame which fed upon the core and heart of their being; and, therefore, from its own force burned its way into the outer man, and shone there. —dharles H. Spurgeon. 19. Moke Thy Petitions Large “Aijd what is the exceeding great ness of his power to usward who be lieve, according to the working of his mighty power” (Eph. 1:19). One of the things that will astonish * us in the glory will be the smallness of our conception as to what the Lord was willing to do for us. If it is ac cording to the exceeding greatness of His power, surely we should look to Him for greater things. As Satan is working with mighty power in these closing years of this present age, so should we expect miracles in the great matter of getting the gospel to all who have never heard.—R. C. McQuilken. 20. Reflected Glory “But we all, with unveiled face be holding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord the Spirit” (2 Cor. 3:18, R. V.). If the Christ-life is there it will come out through the new glory on the face,'and the tenderness of the touch,, and the new love for everybody. The very best testimony that you can ever give to the power of Christ is to live His life over again, not in your own effort, but by the propulsion of that same life within you. “For me to live is to reproduce Christ.” —G. Campbell Morgan. 21. In the Heart of Christ “Wherefore also he is able to save to the uttermost them that draw near unto God through him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them” (Heb. 7:25, R. V.). All along life’s pilgrim way, . God has hidden me In the very heart of Jesus, , Glad and free, Till the lights of heaven . Burst upon my sight,

22. Always Soldiers “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier” (2 Tim, 2:4). A soldier in the Spiritual army is never off his battlefield. He is only removed to another part of the field when a wound interrupts what he meant to do, and sets him doing some thing else. . . . Is it not joy, pure joy, that there is no question of the shelf? No soldier on service is ever “laid aside” ; he is only given another com mission, sometimes just to suffer;. sometimes, when pain and Weakness lessen a little, to fight among the un seen forces of the field. Never, never is he.shelved as,of no further use to his Beloved Captain. —Amy Carmichael. 23. Leading or Following “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me” (Psa. 23:6). There is a mercy which goes before us, and there is a mercy which follows us. The one is the clearing of our own path; the other is the clearing of the path for my brother man ..*.. Any man can desire to be cradled in green pas- tures and led by quiet waters. But to desire that my life may make the pas tures green, to desire that my life may make the waters quiet—that is a di vine prayer, a Christlike prayer. —George Matheson, 24. Divine Currency “Take good heed therefore unto your souls” (Josh. 23:11, margin)., Gold cannot be used for currency 'as lohg as it is mixed with the quartz and rock in which it lies imbedded. So your soul is useless to God till taken .out from sin and earthliness and selfishness, in which it lies buried. By the regenerating power of the Spirit you must be separated unto Christ, stamped with His image and superscription, and made into a di-
