speech only to clothe his thoughts, and his thoughts only to promote truth and virtue. Nothing is more detestable than a professed de- claimer, who retails his discourses as a quaek does his medicine.” If Webster was correct in saying • that the preaching of the gospel was the most potent influence in human affairs, wherein lies the preacher’s power? “ It is not a minister’s wisdom but his conviction which imparts itself to others. Nothing gives life but life; this was the power of the apostle; ‘We believe and there*; fore speak.’ Firm faith in what they spoke—that was the basis of the apostles’ strength.” And likewise will it be the source of our strength. God deliver the earth from men who have no definite con victions about religion! You answer, Yes, but a man should not be dogmatic. Oh, is -that -so! Well, if you do not believe I would be dogmatic, let some very tolerant per- son offer me two one, dollar bills and three quarters for this five-dollar bill. I would immediately insist that such did not make five. I know of no way to state a truth and not be dogmatic. Either Los Angeles is in California br it is not: either H20 is water or it is not. Just so should the preacher be posi tive. The world is sick, sin-sick and needs Jesus, or it is not. If the'world is in need of some outside power be yond and above itself, and I think all will agree that it is, then the preacher, of all men, should know Where that power’ can be found and in whom It is to be found. It is his business to pre sent Jesus Christ to men in such a way as to secure from them a decision. Every man should stand in- his pul pit and preach Christ for the sin and sfns of the world; it is the solemn duty of his congregation to see that he does so preach. If we of the military forces com plete our task in one, two, three, or yet five years and come home, if we do come home, we have every right to expect certain things from you who have been at home in safety. Among the many things, think on these three: 1. A family altar in every home where fathers, mothers, children, and domestics read God’s Word and pray together daily. - , 2. Halls of learning which definitely have instilled a deep reverence for God in the minds of our precious chil dren while we are away. 3. A land filled with preachers who believe, love, and preach nothing but God’s Word. If these things be, then transgres sors will turn from their ways and sinners will be converted unto Him who loved us and gave Himself for,us.
