Fertility is the most profitable trait in the beef business.
We have the least amount of selection tools for the trait that has the most financial influence in the beef business – FERTILITY. Live calves on the ground start with a bull that has enough libido to go out, cover country and service cows and a cow that has enough fertility to settle early in the breeding season. Cows that are bred early in the season have calves with the highest profit potential. Unlike other traits, you can’t ever select for too much fertility. Fertility is 5 times more important than growth, which in turn, is 5 times more important than carcass quality. (Martinez, Boyer, et al - 2020). Shorter calving seasons with selection pressure on early calving cows makes fertility a critical financial driver in the beef cow herd. (Martinez, Boyer, et al - 2020). Cow longevity – and the traits that influence it – are overlooked and under prioritized in the selection process by many breeders and associations. Not here. We have been selecting for fertility since the beginning. We do not – and will not – overlook these important traits. The proof is in our pedigrees. Nearly every one of our Strommen Ranch cows are AI-sired, first cycle, for 8 to 10 generations. Nearly all of our cow herd was born in the first 30 days of the calving season. Nearly every yearling bull in this sale is out of the first cycle of AI service. The two-year-olds are from first or second cycle AI service, all from cows that settled in the first 30 days of the breeding season. When you purchase a Strommen Ranch bull, you are getting the bulls that have natural, bred-in fertility.
