ANNUAL REPORT CATHEDRAL SCHOOL FOR BOYS 2018 ! 2019

DEAR Cathedral School Community,

Choirboys prepare to sing the National Anthem at the Giants game.

The School’s programs are thriving, and we are re-envisioning our campus to support modern approaches to teaching. In fact, while we are working on renovating and expanding the School’s learning spaces on Sacramento and Jones streets, the Bay Area boom has provided our teachers with an even larger learning landscape in terms of resources and inspiration. On any given day, teachers are leveraging off-campus opportunities to bring new life to their lessons and channeling the creativity happening around our city. We remain committed to supporting our teachers and the work they do with our boys. As living costs have increased dramatically, we are allocating financial resources to compensate them appropriately and provide funding for continued professional development. Our teachers are indeed the thought leaders of Cathedral School for Boys and keep our school at the forefront of educational innovation. The great fortune that we have to be at this school at this time is made possible by the involvement, dedication, and support of many individuals in our community. We are so blessed to have a diverse “community bonded by open-heartedness, hope, compassion, and concern.” We know that the richness of our community lies not in material wealth, but in the meaningful personal relationships and friendships that are forged between students, parents, and teachers as we work together to mold the next generation of wise, courageous, and caring leaders.

WE ARE FORTUNATE TO LIVE IN THIS PLACE DURING THIS TIME. Like Florence during the Renaissance, over the last several decades, the San Francisco Bay Area has become the worldwide nexus of innovation. Here, we experience a consistent cycle of new technologies

enabling new solutions to problems and creating new businesses, and in some cases, entirely new industries. These days, it feels like this cycle has accelerated to warp speed. There are, of course, complications associated with the economic boom that this innovation cycle has driven: the high cost of living, the lack of affordable housing, and increased traffic and over-crowdedness. However, there are also tremendous opportunities for living in a place that increasingly attracts diverse thought leaders from around the world. As an Episcopal School, Cathedral School for Boys was founded to serve “a diverse student body…respectful and welcoming to [all] people.” We welcome a diversity of backgrounds, experiences, traditions, and beliefs because we understand that this diversity positively influences everyone in our community, especially our boys. We have made great strides in increasing our student body diversity, which is now 42% students of color. We continue to budget for a robust adjustable tuition program to maintain socioeconomic diversity among our families. As costs continue to rise, we also recognize that we need to allocate even more resources to this effort. The recent launch of the Community Scholars Program is one way that we hope to continue attracting the best and brightest student minds to Cathedral School and ensure a diverse community of families.

All the Best, Greg Gretsch Board Chair

A Letter from Student Council President…

DEAR Cathedral School Community,

Student Council is a group of students who are elected by their schoolmates to represent both their classes and the student body. We give Cathedral boys the chance to voice their ideas and implement them. This year, we brought about much change. We submitted a proposal for urinal dividers for the Upper School bathrooms on the grounds of privacy. The request was approved, and the urinal dividers were installed. In addition, students expressed discontent to backpacks being banned from use in class. The Student Council submitted a petition to the administration and it was granted a trial week. We also organize various fundraisers. Throughout the year, we had a fundraiser for Valentine’s Day where proceeds went to City Hope Community Center. City Hope is an organization in the Tenderloin that provides a safe space for those without a living space. We raised $300 from selling candy to the Cathedral community, which funded one of the monthly breakfasts we prepared and served the City Hope Community. Another thing Student Council organizes is Cathedral’s Spirit Days. These days allow students to express school or community spirit. We come up with the themes and schedule of our Spirit Days. This year, we had Spirit Days almost monthly. These included: Bay Area Day, when students wore clothing from local sports teams or companies, and Pajama Day. In addition, the Student Council holds an end-of-year fair. The fair has food, games, a Slam Dunk contest, bouncy houses, and other activities to cap off the end of the year. We plan the activities and events of the day, and assign students and teachers to oversee each activity. Student Council is an important part of student life, and helps meaningful causes in and outside of school. We also uphold and strengthen school traditions. This desire to improve the School and community, I am sure, will be continued by students in years to come. Sincerely, Stefan Tsakalakis Class 2019

The budgetary gap between tuition income and the actual cost of School operations is covered primarily by donations to The Cathedral School Fund. It serves as a silent scholarship for every boy at the school. In 2018-2019, The Cathedral School Fund was budgeted to raise $995,000 and we raised $1,258,493 in gifts for the School. The Parents Association contributed an additional $185,000 to the School’s operating budget. Draw from the endowment covered the remaining amount required to run the School’s exemplary programs. In the 2019-20 year, we have budgeted to raise $1.13M through the Cathedral School Fund and $185,000 through the Parents Association. As you can see from the chart to the right, The Cathedral School Fund represents the largest portion of funds raised for the School’s annual operations.

African-American families. “This was a special honor, and we gratefully acknowledge that we honed our parenting skills at CSB, even as our sons were being educated in important values that they continue to demonstrate in their lives,” says Alma. “We participate as donors to the annual fund and attend as many CSB alumni events as we can with gratitude for the benefits that we continue to receive from this generous community.” Remembering fondly that both of their sons, Akintoye, ’96, and Willieford, ’98, served in the Choir of Men and Boys, Alma and Toye usually attend at least one Christmas concert every year and also enjoy hearing the choir during Sunday morning services at the Cathedral as often as possible. Alma, who served on the Board of CSB, from 1991 to 1997, continued: “It brings back cherished memories of our choir family when we prepared Thursday Evensong dinners and showed up for Friday hymn sings. As members of the choir and supporting crew, we all learned an extra measure of discipline and teamwork—minds, hearts, hands, voices—we see the CSB theme resonating in the lives of our sons, whose careers are centered in public service.” Akin runs a program for Prep for Prep, a non-profit organization in New York City that helps talented Black and Latino middle school students succeed academically and gain admission to competitive boarding schools. Willie is now the senior fellow in pediatric surgery at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife, Serene. Their sisters, too, are committed to service careers—Toyin, an actress, works as a program manager for California Lawyers for the Arts and is a member of the junior board of Inner City Arts, an organization that provides arts programs for children in the Skid Row area of Los Angeles; Isabelle, a management consultant and executive coach who lives in Detroit, is the Director of Talent Development for Faith in Action, a national faith-based, social justice organization.

THE WITTER GILLETTE FAMILY ENDOWED FUND in support of the Community Scholars Program In 2018, Cathedral School for Boys established the Community Scholars Program, a comprehensive merit scholarship for high-achieving, low-income boys of color entering the fifth or sixth grade. The Community Scholarship Fund established by the Board will provide up to full tuition in addition to funding for school-associated expenses such as transportation, uniforms, supplies, technology access and athletic equipment. The School received an extraordinary leadership gift from the Witter and Gillette families, establishing the Witter Gillette Family Endowed Fund in support of the Community Scholars Program. This gift continues the family’s legacy of instrumental support of Cathedral School for Boys that began at its inception. We are grateful for their continued commitment to the School and dedication to the success of this important program.

Evan Remedios, Class of 1991, passed away in 2016 at the young age of 39. After graduating from Cathedral, Evan attended University High School and earned his B.A. at UC Santa Barbara. He then served fifteen years as a Police Officer with the City and County of San Francisco. Evan’s parents, Edward and Bobbie, reached out to Cathedral School to explore ways to honor his memory, and this discussion led to the establishment of the Evan Remedios Scholarship Fund. The funds generated by this endowment will be used to provide financial support to students in need throughout their time at the school. The Evan Remedios Scholarship Fund is being established at a time when the School is increasing its efforts to support a diverse student body that is reflective of the demographics of San Francisco and make the Cathedral School experience accessible to a wide array of students. We’d like to thank Edward and Bobbie Remedios for their commitment to the School in honor of Evan, and to these donors who contributed to this new fund over the past year. FRANCES K. FIELD AWARD FOR ACHIEVEMENT IN PUBLIC SPEAKING In 2008, CSB received a gift from the Frances K. Field Foundation to begin the Frances K. Field Award for Achievement in Public Speaking. Thanks to their ongoing support, all Upper School boys currently participate in the program. Four boys are chosen from fifth and sixth grades to represent their class section and those boys then perform their speeches at an Upper School assembly. In seventh grade, all students engage in a debate centered around a current event. The top three performers in each section are selected by students to compete as a debate team in the final round. All eighth-grade boys write and present their own persuasive speech, with the top two speakers in each section participating in the final round. With guidance from the Director of Upper School, the winning teams and individuals at each grade level have the honor of determining a special program, event or improvement to benefit their class or the school which is funded by the Field Foundation. We’d like to thank the Frances K. and Charles D. Field Foundation for their ongoing support of this program, which allows us to advance the skill of public speaking at Cathedral School for Boys.
