2018-19 Annual Report

A Letter from Student Council President…

DEAR Cathedral School Community,

Student Council is a group of students who are elected by their schoolmates to represent both their classes and the student body. We give Cathedral boys the chance to voice their ideas and implement them. This year, we brought about much change. We submitted a proposal for urinal dividers for the Upper School bathrooms on the grounds of privacy. The request was approved, and the urinal dividers were installed. In addition, students expressed discontent to backpacks being banned from use in class. The Student Council submitted a petition to the administration and it was granted a trial week. We also organize various fundraisers. Throughout the year, we had a fundraiser for Valentine’s Day where proceeds went to City Hope Community Center. City Hope is an organization in the Tenderloin that provides a safe space for those without a living space. We raised $300 from selling candy to the Cathedral community, which funded one of the monthly breakfasts we prepared and served the City Hope Community. Another thing Student Council organizes is Cathedral’s Spirit Days. These days allow students to express school or community spirit. We come up with the themes and schedule of our Spirit Days. This year, we had Spirit Days almost monthly. These included: Bay Area Day, when students wore clothing from local sports teams or companies, and Pajama Day. In addition, the Student Council holds an end-of-year fair. The fair has food, games, a Slam Dunk contest, bouncy houses, and other activities to cap off the end of the year. We plan the activities and events of the day, and assign students and teachers to oversee each activity. Student Council is an important part of student life, and helps meaningful causes in and outside of school. We also uphold and strengthen school traditions. This desire to improve the School and community, I am sure, will be continued by students in years to come. Sincerely, Stefan Tsakalakis Class 2019
