College of Business Annual Report

Re-Engineering Graduate Learning The Worldwide College of Business was excited to launch a redesigned curriculum for three of its graduate degree programs in August 2021. The enhanced MBA in Aviation, M.S. in Engineering Management and M.S. in Management programs provide students with a high-reliability organizations (HRO) foundation, a degree-specific core and a resume-boosting certificate of their choice. HRO concepts, such as risk management and risk mitigation, are woven throughout the program,

Why is your research important? What are the possible real-world applications? Understanding the forces, be they tangible or invisible, that shape communities around us, sustain households, result in public policy and are used as strategic initiatives for entire communities is important. Remittances are a global phenomenon that not only are found to finance development, but also impact quality of life and can be connected to the preservation of cultural traditions. Our research starts at the very basic level of introducing the word — remittances — into general use and then making the human connection to this global occurrence. What are the next steps with your research? We plan to continue this line of academic inquiry through more direct involvements and on-the- ground research endeavors. It is our hope that we can further delve into the strategies utilized by the household sector and offer further strength to the connection between remittances and cultural traditions. Additionally, through connections with national governments and private money transfer institutions, I plan to delve deeper into the global economic impacts of remittances with a focus on private money transfers as soft power.

preparing students to succeed in the high-risk and complex environments of today’s organizations. With flexible delivery options, including a 100% online curriculum, students can now pursue a program that meets their individual goals while distinguishing themselves from the competition. Did you know that the amount of remittances sent back by migrants is three times the size of international development aid? In 2019, annual remittance flow to low-

and middle-income countries reached over USD $550 billion — which means remittance flow is larger than foreign direct investment. Dr. Merritt’s remittance research seeks to understand the role that remittances play in international development, from the individual to the country and globe. How did you get interested in studying the topic of remittances? While I was working toward my Ph.D. in Strategy, circa 2014, I began to become more interested in diaspora communities. I remember sitting in a doctoral-level discussion course and realizing that my previous work with Federally Qualified Health Clinics and the import company I owned at the time all had connections to migrants, migration and being connected to one’s country of origin while physically living in another country. While the U.S. is my home, I love to travel and become immersed in different cultures. How have you explored remittance research since joining the College of Business in 2018? We presented our first scholarly research in 2016, published a few subsequent articles, and then in August 2020 our first book, Remittances and International Development , was released. Since the publication, my co-author (Dr. Sabith Khan) and I have been invited to several book talks and lectures to disseminate our research findings.

“The HRO theme in our program is really unique and distinct. In today’s world, every organization can benefit from a better understanding of systemic risk and how it can impact an organization moving forward. Most schools and programs typically do not have a unifying theme across their graduate degrees.”

Dr. Maneesh Sharma

“Remittances are typically transfers from a well-meaning individual or family member to another individual or household. They are targeted to meet specific needs of the recipients.”
