First Year Breeding Season 100% Guarantee All bulls selling for $4,000 or more will be covered 100% (less salvage value) by Mt. Rushmore Angus, if they are injured during their first breeding season and not able to return to service during that first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90 day period following the first turn out of the bulls. 100% of the value of the injured bull, minus salvage value, will be given as credit in a future sale or toward a replace- ment bull if one is available. All injured bulls must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Please notify us as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. All claims must be made by September 1. This is not a mortal- ity insurance, nor does it cover mismanagement or neglect. On February 22nd, we invite you to attend our annual production sale here at the ranch. Please review the information provided and take the time to come inspect early and ask ques- tions at your leisure. The bulls will again be sold in a video format this year. Pictures were taken in mid-January, and videos were recorded in early February. The videos will be posted sometime within the two weeks before the sale. Whew, what a year, seems as if January 1, 2025 was just yesterday. The bulls were weaned in mid-September and grown here at the ranch all the way through delivery to your opera- tions. We take great pride in the fact that our calves are grown on native pasture without sup- plementation of creep feed, like many of your operations. We source much of our purchased feedstuffs from the local market and, in many cases, from current customers. These bulls have been bred with as much precision as possible. We always start with a base genetic focus of structural soundness, optimum birth weights, and bold weaning weights. Enhancements are made with strong maternal strength and cutting-edge carcass charac- teristics. Combined Value ($C), an index expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then as- sumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per carcass, represents the expected aver- age differences in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value com- pared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase, and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid. Weaned Calf Value ($W), expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected difference in future progeny preweaning performance from birth to weaning. In- creased selection pressure on $W increases weaning and maternal milk traits while increasing mature cow size. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), an index expressed in dollars per head, pre- dicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. $M is built off of a self-replacing herd model where commercial cattlemen replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% in subsequent gen - erations. Remaining cull females and all male progeny are sold as feeder calves. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production. Ribeye Area (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling (Marb), is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Maternal Milk (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mother- ing ability in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.
