ANNUAL REPORT CATHEDRAL SCHOOL FOR BOYS 2016 ! 2017

DEAR Cathedral School Supporters,

It would be sophistic, however, to limit our appreciation to financial commitments alone. Better than most, Cathedral has always recognized the myriad ways in which those who believe in us express their support—from volunteering in the lunch room, to touting the School to prospective families, to showing up for important school events. In fact, I believe that the real strength of any institution is best displayed through the less obvious expressions of support—expressions that go largely overlooked and routinely unmentioned in a school’s annual report. If this is the case, then Cathedral School for Boys is the standard bearer. As we look to build upon our successes from last year, then, it is important to thank all of those who, in ways recognized or not, contributed to the progress of this place. Our ability to nurture each boy and our leadership in the education of boys would not be possible without you. We are so appreciative of all that you do for this wonderful place. Very truly yours,

BY ALMOST EVERY MEASURE, THE 2016 ! 17 ACADEMIC YEAR PROVED TO BE A GREAT ONE for Cathedral School. Our Annual Fund easily surpassed $1 million. Over 96% of our parents contributed to this effort. We completed a yearlong strategic planning process that has charted an exciting future for our school. We retained architects to evaluate our campus and to help us

envision how our space might better support a more modern, boy-friendly approach to learning. Amid one of the most competitive independent school admission markets in the country, our high school placement was as strong as it has ever been. We continue to attract interesting and talented boys from all over the city to our school. We have a great deal to feel good about. While I may run the risk of sounding immodest in mentioning these accomplishments, I believe it is important to recognize that none of this would have been possible without the support of those who continue to believe in and support this school.

DEAR Cathedral School Community,

$1 million in pledges and gifts received for the second year running. To add to the excitement brewing in our hallways, next year we will finish our 60th year and look forward to celebrating this milestone with various activities and events that will emphasize the importance of history and sharing stories with younger generations. I know from my many years as a Cathedral parent and Trustee that we all have unique stories to tell about how the School has touched our lives. Next year’s festivities will provide a wonderful opportunity for all of us to share some of our stories. Please save the date of April 28, 2018 for a community-wide celebration of our school’s 60th anniversary. This year marks my thirteenth as a parent at Cathedral. It is a sign of the School’s uniqueness that I feel as engaged and excited by the community now as I did when we began this journey many years ago. One of my Trustee colleagues refers to this as Cathedral’s “special sauce.” The ingredients include dedicated and talented teachers and administrators who get to know every boy; a program that emphasizes compassion and service alongside top-notch academics; and the incredible generosity of our community members. Harking back to that line from Mary Oliver quoted above, the School fosters in our boys—and in fact, in all who set foot in the School—a sense of wonder, playfulness, and humility. Thank you for helping to make Cathedral School for Boys a place where learning is joyful for all involved. Warmly,

ONE OF MY FAVORITE POETS, MARY OLIVER, ONCE WROTE “Let me keep my distance, always, from those who think they have the answers. Let me keep company always with those who say Look! and laugh in astonishment, and bow their heads.” These lines came to mind recently as our Board of Trustees voted to approve a new strategic plan for Cathedral School for Boys. These

lines aptly describe the process that the plan’s committee took when examining our school and identifying areas of growth over the coming years. The committee entered the process with open minds; willing to take a hard look at every aspect of our school. After many months of investigation and conversations, we settled on a plan with three major goals—program, place, and people. A focus on these goals will retain and strengthen those essential and much-loved qualities of our school, while adapting our program and facilities so that we remain a leader in boys’ education. If you haven’t already done so, I urge you to page through the beautiful Strategic Planning book that was distributed to our community. It describes in detail the exciting initiatives that the School will be adopting in the coming years. Even as the strategic planning process was underway, our school continued to thrive. Though only in his third year, our Headmaster has integrated seamlessly into our school. His presence can be felt everywhere, whether he is shaking the hands of the boys at morning drop-off, leading faculty in an exercise at staff meetings, or modeling risk-taking by singing his part in “We Three Kings” at Lessons & Carols. Under the watch of our remarkable development team, the Cathedral School Fund once again had a banner year, closing with over

In June of 2017, Cathedral started an Virtual Field Day as a class competition to see which alumni classes could get the highest participation in the Cathedral Fund. Bill Bennington ’79 started an email chain for his class and with some help from David Porter, Max Young, and others, 100% of the alumni they contacted made a gift. Through the email chain the guys swapped old and new photos, relayed news about their families, shared memories of their time at Cathedral and began planning their upcoming 40th Reunion. Great job guys of ‘79 and a big thanks to all of our alumni participants. Final Standing in the Virtual Field Day: TOP FIVE CLASSES

Members of The Guardian Society are invited to various school-related functions every year, including tickets to the annual Christmas Concert at Grace Cathedral. THE DOTTIE SAYWARD WYLIE FUND

From 1990 - 2005, Dottie Sayward Wylie served as CSB’s Director of Admission and helped parents and children navigate the daunting and difficult process of finding the right school. A vital part of her work was always to build a community that reflected a broad and varied diversity; a community that respected and celebrated differences in the context of an inclusive and welcoming environment. She was aware of and sensitive to the financial needs that arise after a family has entered into the school community, and how sometimes these needs go unmet, causing stress and worry for the family. Upon her retirement in 2005, Dottie gave a monetary gift to the school in order to fill this need and provide a designated fund for this purpose. Cathedral School for Boys then named this fund The THE WILLIAM SCHUPPEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND On the occasion of their 15th reunion, the Class of 1979 established a permanent memorial to William “Bill” Schuppel ’79, that will support the educational program at CSB by providing needed financial assistance to students at the School. Currently designated as a “Discretionary Fund”, it gives assistance to students who demonstrate need for a learning specialist, special testing or tuition assistance. We thank the generous donors who have made contributions to the William Schuppel Memorial Scholarship Fund during the 2016-17 school year: Elynor and William Schuppel* Alison and William Bennington ’79

Dottie Sayward Wylie Fund in her honor. Her greatest desire was that the fund would continue to grow and provide help for families for many years. Families who qualify receive help with purchasing uniforms, school pictures, gym shirts, outdoor education expenses, tutoring, testing, foreign language trips, extended day care or anything else not covered by tuition to ensure that every boy will experience all the school has to offer. We gratefully acknowledge the following donors who have generously contributed to the Dottie Sayward Wylie Fund during the 2016-17 school year: Judith Saldamando Dorothy Sayward Wylie CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE HEADMASTER’S DISCRETIONARY FUND The Headmaster’s Discretionary Fund is a special fund that may be used for needs outside of the regular curriculum. Funds from this pool may be used for a boy who requires a tutor, or for a student whose family is unable to afford testing fees or other academic services outside of tuition, or to extend these types of services to families and students who would otherwise be unable to take advantage of them. We gratefully acknowledge the following donors who have generously contributed to the Headmasters Fund during the 2016-17 school year: Mrs. David Jamison McDaniel* Sylvia and Fred Chow*
