Air Systems Design Celebrates 43 Years ‘Dusting Up’ The Industry The paper industry and its many segments – corrugat- ed containerboard, folding carton, tissue and non-wov- ens among them – have long been scrap-intensive and “dusty,” a necessary and often unpleasant byproduct of the industry’s manufacturing processes. Mandeville, Lou- isiana based Air Systems Design (ASD), has been happily “dusting up” these segments for 40 years this June, there- by creating a less hazardous and safer environments in which all parties can prosper. The seeds of the company were planted by its found- er Robert Zacary, Sr., who after graduating engineering school began his career with Scott Paper in Philadelphia, where his first assignments involved handling waste for

tissue mills. He was later involved in building Scott’s tissue mill in Mobile, Alabama, from the ground up. While working on the mill, he met a gen- tleman in New Orleans who was building scrap systems for Nadustco, (many in the industry may remember it as National Blow Pipe). Given their career commonalities in scrap and waste, the two became very good friends. After the Mobile mill project was complete, Zacary Sr.’s friend offered him a job with Nadustco as its New England salesman. Back then, his job as a salesman for a company selling scrap systems meant leav- ing home on Monday morning, visiting con- tainer plants throughout the Northeast all week, returning home on Friday evening, writing up his orders, then mailing them to New Orleans, where the proposals would get written up and sent to customers. Cus- tomer approvals followed and the work flowed in. “I remember my father talking about companies named Union Camp, Champi- on, and Westvaco, all of which have since merged or been acquired,” says Zacary Jr. “I also remember him talking about his ‘in- dependent’ customer, Southern Champion Tray in Chattanooga, a family-owned com- pany that is still a customer of ours and con- tinues to grow.” In 1974, the elder Zacary moved his fam- ily from Philadelphia down to New Orleans so he could be its vice president and con- tinue to grow the company. With the sale of the Nadustco several years later and with ambitious thoughts of striking out on his own, the entrepreneurial Robert Zacary Sr. made his move. “Dad left Nadustco on a Friday afternoon
