we would have the best luck with people who have no ex- perience running a flexo because they are an open book with no old habits to unlearn. The inexperienced ones seem to pick it up faster than the experienced ones. Isowa knows what it’s doing – they’re selling about 20 machines a year – and they know how to train their trainers.”
Lights Flashing, Horns Blowing According to Mackley, after hearing nothing but great things from box makers who’d invested in an Isowa, “the lights were flashing and the horns were blowing.” He was

reminded to again reach out to Isowa’s Sander to revis- it the idea of a new flexo, one with an inline die cutter. “Now we were ready and we knew what we wanted,” says Mackley. “We visited nearby Liberty Diversified to see their Isowa and again, we were amazed. After ‘serious’ talks, we finally reached an agreement to buy an Isowa Ibis, then added an Alliance prefeeder and load former, C&M con- veyors, and a Mosca strapper.” The new IBIS was installed in December of 2023 and after the “bugs” were worked out, it was January of 2024 and the Ibis took flight and started to soar. Tilsner Carton added an EAM Mosca SQ4 Strapper to the back end of the Isowa Ibis.
The Ibis has been online for about 16 months and Til- sner boasts seasoned, well-trained crews on both its first and second shifts. In 2024, the company ran about 48-mil- lion feet on its Ibis with the lofty goal of 100 million in 2025. It was able to take all the footage off the old 38-inch ma- chine and another 15 million off its mini. With new business and added capacity, achievement of the goal appears all but certain. ‘Hitting The Marks’ “We have been ‘hitting the marks’ and getting setups down to under 10 minutes, but we still have a way to go,” Tilsner Carton chose ‘John Deere Green’ as the color of their new high-speed Isowa Ibis.

Operator excellence drives the success of ACME Corrugated Box Company’s rst Falcon . An e ffi cient crew and a great machine together helped eliminate a weekend shift while maintaining volume.
An assortment of POP displays in Tilsner’s design area represent the spectrum of market segments.
The process was helped along by Akers Packaging, who was happy to help train Tilsner’s eight operators for four days in its Middletown, Ohio, facility, where one Ibis and two Falcons have been workhorses on their produc- tion floor for years. Combined with the training offered by Isowa, Tilsner’s operators got “up to speed” and produc- ing very quickly. “Some of our operators were experienced and some had no experience at all,” says Mackley. “The trainers said
says Mackley. “We realized we could run what used to be an entire day’s business in a single morning, so we’ve had to change and the way we manage because we can burn through 15-20 orders in a shift. We’ve also realized how important it is to keep the machine well fed.” Not surprisingly, the Isowa Ibis also made it easier to sell more boxes. Tilsner’s sales staff of 10, including a sales manager, has been bringing in as much flexo business as
