D I S C U S S with DR. SAMUEL H. SUTHERLAND/DR. CHARLES L FEINBERG

Q . Phoenix, Ariz. — “Can you tell me why it was that Biola dropped its Missionary Medicine course ?” A. This was a ministry in 1945, about 25 years ago. At that time there were far more pioneer mission fields open. The School of Mission ary Medicine wasn’t designed to train nurses or medical doctors. Its purpose was to give general mission aries some of the basic elements of medicine should they be where no help would be available. There was a concentrated one year of training offered. Meanwhile the day of the pioneer missionary has gradually diminished and given way to the specialist. There were fewer young people who could spend this year for such training due to needs for their specific area. This program then was phased out into our present nursing program at Biola College. The head and staff of the School of Missionary Medicine came to our Campus to as sist in this important and vital de velopment. It is thrilling, by the way, to see the high percentage of students in the Department of Nurs ing who are planning definitely on the mission field. Q . Seattle, Wash. — “I ’ve read many times of Jesus’ early life in the Gos pels. I ’m having trouble understand ing Matthew 2:14 and Luke 2:39 as the age of Christ at that time. Could you please explain?”

A. These two verses are not in the same bracket of time in our Lord’s life. Luke 2 :39 might place the Sav iour at about 40 days old. The ques tion is on the statement, “When they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord,” and its in terpretation. Even today, among Or thodox Jews, there’s the ceremony called the redemption of the first born. This would call for a period of about 30 days. Matthew 2:14 is different entirely for it concerns the flight into Egypt. The Saviour could have been about a year and a half old. Chronologically then, Luke 2 is the earlier reference. Q . Portland, Ore. — “What do I tell a 12-year-old in my Sunday school class who believes in horoscopes?” A. It is amazing to see how many people are misled by such foolish no tions. Scripture tells us that in the end times men will turn away from the Word of God and listen to any thing. God says in Deuteronomy 28 that the hidden things belong to the Lord our God. To consult astronomy is unauthorized meddling in things invisible and unseen. Satan is mar shalling his forces for the end time. Tell the child to have nothing what soever to do with such things. It’s contrary to the Bible. Q . Santa Rosa, Calif. — “Can a per son who gossips, holds anger and 23
