WOMEN’S LEGAL AND HUMAN
Title of Project: Nothing About Us Without Us: Amplifying Voices of Marginalized Sectors in Masbate, Zambales, and Samar
The Women’s Legal and Human Rights Bureau Inc. (WLB) was established in 1990 by feminist human rights advocates wanting to effectively address the prejudices suffered by Filipino women before the law and in the legal system. WLB emerged as the first consciously feminist legal organization pushing for feminist legal advocacy as a strategy for the promotion and defense of women’s human rights. The organization has a long-term vision to create community and state system with gender equality and justice through strengthening the capability of women with the principle of care and solidarity. WLB and Kalyanamitra, the first feminist organization in Jakarta, Indonesia established in 1985, work hand-in-hand in implementing this project. They have been active within the women’s movements in their respective countries and in SEA for more than two decades. They have also consistently applied feminist perspectives in their advocacy works that include educating women’s grassroots organizations, writing modules, and providing trainings on women’s human rights. Part of WLB’s objective is to capacitate and develop 120 women leader champions in the communities advocating for women and gender equality laws, programs, services towards improving women’s access to justice and social services; develop or enhance local legal framework that will serve as basis for substantive and meaningful political participation of women leaders in planning, implementation and monitoring of programs for women to address discrimination and exploitation both in public and private spheres, create mechanism/s for women, especially victims of exploitation and abuse, towards a more inclusive and participatory planning, budgeting and monitoring at the local level, and help local women organizations strengthen and develop their own organizational programs to critically engage and influence the local and national processes towards a more meaningful participation of women. The project aims to improve women’s access to justice and social services by creating an accountability mechanism at the local and national levels towards a more substantive and meaningful participation of the marginalized groups of women in the target communities.
