“The customers that come weekly, daily some of them, you really get to know them and I think they love that too — as soon as they walk in, we know what they want.” You’re stranded on a deserted island, but you have a month’s supply of one of your pastries. Which one is it? That is a great question… haha! I have never been asked that one. But I know my answer. It would be our eccles and biscotti. They both keep well and don’t need refrigeration. So being stranded, it’s a perfect treat that will keep me satisfied!

THE DRIVE’S SOULFUL START

Opening day: March 1st, 1997

In Conversation With Fratelli’s Bakery THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH BISCOTTI Meet Owner Marco Cornale

We have been here for 28 years in March, so I have seen three generations of some of my customers. It is so nice to see so many familiar faces weekly here. The customers that come weekly, daily some of them, you really get to know them and I think they love that too — as soon as they walk in, we know what they want. Something you don’t get shopping in big box stores. I have had the same staff for years — some since the beginning — so we get to really know our customers. What makes Commercial Drive special? As I’ve said above, the community surrounding the Drive is what makes it special. Like JNZ Deli that’s been around for over 35 years — two sisters who are keeping the legacy their parents built. Giancarlo’s Cafe serves up some delicious coffee and food. Continental Coffee across the street is another community hot spot for people to gather and have coffee. It’s an honour being amongst these great businesses.

Commercial Drive has been a hub of activity for over 100 years — the community first blossomed when a streetcar from New Westminster connected to the area in 1890. But it wasn’t until the 1950s, after World War II, that Commercial Drive truly flourished as a multicultural neighbourhood. Italians had been flocking to Vancouver since the 19th century turned into the 20th, but they arrived in great, tumbling waves in the 1950s. Their lively (and tasty) culture stretched east, and Commercial Drive, now known as Little Italy, came to be one of their centres.

More cultures caught on. Portuguese, South East Asian, and Caribbean immigrants were drawn to the area, adding to the mosaic of colours and flavours. And then came the artists and musicians, energizing the neighbourhood with creativity and activism from the 1980s onwards. Commercial Drive has been built by locals, which you can still see in the mom-and-pop shops that have served the community for decades.

Tell us about the history of your bakery. I opened the bakery on March 1st, 1997. Seems so long ago now. We opened with the idea to have customers come in for one thing, and leave with many more. That is pretty well what’s been happening for the last 27 years. As soon as you walk in, our showcases are always full of a variety of baked goods. Our customer favourites are assorted pastries, especially the cannoli and eclairs, our assorted biscotti, and, for cakes, our Saint Honoré is by far the most popular. What do you love about having a business here? The thing I like about having the business here on the Drive, Little Italy, is the community.

A CURIOUS NOTE Long before shops and cafes lined the street, Commercial Drive (Park Drive back then) was a route used to drag logs down to the harbour.

The Rio Theatre opened its doors as cameras were rolling on the Wizard of Oz — 1938, to be exact. Since those early years, the East Van landmark has transformed from cinema to bowling alley and back to cinema — including a stint as the Golden Princess Theatre, when it screened Chinese films. But today it’s not just a place to watch a film. It’s become a cultural hub for dance, poetry, comedy, improv, and music. You may catch spoken word performed by John Waters, a David Lynch double bill, a Halloween-themed burlesque show, Oscars night, or a Q&A with Kevin Smith. You’ll buy tickets to films you loved when you were a kid and films released today. The Rio is a Vancouver icon — Seth Rogan and Ryan Reynolds agree — and it’s just down the street from your home at Eastward. CURTAINS UP ON CULTURE

In Conversation With Grandview Lanes RETRO RECREATION Meet Office Administrator Sarah Pramberg Tell us about the history of your business? Grandview Lanes, opened in 1947, is run by three generations of the Marino family, providing a classic bowling experience with a retro vibe. Today, we offer 10-pin bowling, arcade games, and a casual environment for all ages. We’re proud to be a community hub, hosting league play, events, and open bowling. What do you love about having a business here? Being part of this vibrant, diverse neighbourhood is a joy. The community’s spirit and love for local businesses make it a perfect place to operate. What makes Commercial Drive special? Commercial Drive is special for its eclectic mix of cultures, shops, and restaurants. It’s always buzzing with energy, making it a great spot for people to gather and enjoy the atmosphere. Share a couple of favourite spots in the community. Two of my favorite spots are The Burrow for its delicious food and cozy ambiance, and the Rio Theatre , which brings a mix of films and live shows to the area. Both capture the unique, welcoming feel of the Drive. What’s the best name you’ve seen for a bowling team? “Gutter Up” stands out as a fun and clever choice! “Being part of this vibrant, diverse neighbourhood is a joy.”

WHAT TO ORDER FROM CONCESSION: Popcorn or a grilled cheese A can of Persephone lager, a slushie margarita, or a Baileys coffee

A CURIOUS NOTE The Rio Theatre used to be a bowling alley — owned and operated by the Marino family, too.

A CURIOUS NOTE In 2012, owner Corinne Lea took a stand against archaic liquor laws — she influenced a change that would allow alcohol to be served in all British Columbian movie theatres with a primary liquor license. It was a historic moment that also won her the Diamond Jubilee Governor General award. Raise your glass or can to her as you settle into your seat.

The Lunch Lady in Vancouver was born out of a deep love for Vietnamese cuisine and a desire to bring an authentic yet elevated version of it to Canada. Steak Lúc Lắc was born in our Vancouver location — tender ribeye caramelized in a hot wok, coated in a rich peppercorn sauce, and served with crispy cassava. It’s a dish that brings nostalgia while elevating traditional flavors. But if we’re paying homage to The Lunch Lady in Saigon, Chef Thanh’s Bún Bò Huế is a must. It’s a deep, aromatic beef and lemongrass noodle soup, packed with layers of flavour and spice. It’s one of the most soulful bowls of noodles you’ll ever have, and it represents the heart of Vietnamese cuisine. Both dishes showcase what The Lunch Lady is all about — bold flavors, deep tradition, and incredible food that brings people together. What do you love about Commercial Drive? Commercial Drive has an energy that feels alive — there’s a sense of community, a love for food, and a mix of cultures that make it one of the most dynamic areas in Vancouver. It’s

You’ll see the familiar plastic stools, the bustling energy of customers enjoying their bowls of noodle soup — including Anthony Bourdain himself — along with the motorbike culture of Vietnam, like the man napping on his bike, a common sight in Saigon. I wanted this mural to transport people the moment they see it — bringing them straight into the vibrant streets of Vietnam. It’s more than just an image. It’s a window into the experience of eating at the original Lunch Lady, where the air is thick with the aroma of simmering broth, where locals and travelers sit side by side, and where food is more than just a meal — it’s a story, a tradition, and a connection to something bigger. In Conversation With Your Dog’s New Bestie ROVER’S STAR SITTER Meet Local Dog Walker Vidhi G.

Why do dogs love the Commercial Drive community? I think the Commercial Drive community is the best place for dogs in East Van and one of the best in the city. With access to so many dog off-leash areas, parks, and fields, it’s impossible for your dog to get bored. Dog owners here are amazing and the friendliest. I have worked with so many families here and a lot of my favorite dogs are from our community. You can create a routine to your (and your dog’s) liking, whether it’s walking the tree-lined side streets, playtime in parks, playdates with other dogs and exploring alleys and school playgrounds after hours. There are also so many awesome independent pet shops and groomers in the area. And if you’re travelling you’ll always find someone (like myself) nearby to take care of your fur babies. What’s your favourite dog-walking route? One of my favorite routes is walking down to Powell and then Wall Street — making a stop at Woodland park along the way. Then a nice long walk to Burrard View Park for off-leash playtime, and then ending the long adventure with treats from Long Live Cats and Dogs or Moonlight before heading back. Lots of sniffs, pets, and steps. Any tips for dog walking in the community? My one tip would be to enroll your dog in puppy school or at least one-on-one training (which I also provide) at an early age (and it’s never too late). Provide lots of enrichment and give your dog your full attention while you’re out with them — which means no screen time or AirPods. Your dog knows when you’re distracted. And if that’s a barrier then hire a dog walker. We love spoiling AND training your dogs.

“With access to so many dog off- leash areas, parks, and fields, it’s impossible for your dog to get bored.”

A CURIOUS NOTE Eastward features a pet wash station, where you can keep your pup’s fur looking fine as they strut through town, and then wash the dirt off paws before they step back into your home.

Why is Commercial Drive the perfect place for you? Commercial Drive is by and large the best neighbourhood in Vancouver. Its rich history and non-conformist attitude give it an edge that you don’t often see in a city like Vancouver, whose reputation is more about outdoor living and beautiful beaches. Commercial Drive is approachable, colourful, and has its own microclimate of shops, galleries, theatres, restaurants, and parks, presenting almost as its own little city. The Drive is a melting pot of unique businesses run by incredibly hard-working people, who are very supportive of one another and preserving the Drive’s eclectic and vibrant culture and feel. We love being part of that! If Commercial Drive were a cocktail, what would it be? We think it would be a Boulevardier. It’s straightforward and honest. DESIGNING WORLDS WITH STE. MARIE

“Pepino’s is the closest thing to eating at my Nona’s house. The food is delicious and you leave full!” — Evan Allegretto President, Intracorp BC

The best spaces, the places you can’t get enough of, are brimming with stories, curiosities, and comforts. Ste. Marie Studio is recognized for creating immersive spaces — worlds — that evoke emotion and keep people returning for more. Many of these places exist in East Van, including Caffe La Tana, Pepino’s, and Flourist, to name just a few. Eastward is one of their worlds, too.

Pepino’s

BUY THE PASTA HERE

In Conversation With Caffe La Tana OLD-WORLD ITALIAN EATERY Meet Emily Goodrich, Director at Banda Volpi Tell us about La Tana’s design story. La Tana used to be a convenience store, so it was quite the transformation. Paul and Craig had always dreamed of opening an alimentari, similar to the ones you find in every neighbourhood in Italy. Somewhere locals could pop into in the morning on their way to work for an espresso, somewhere they could stop by on their way home for fresh pasta and all the ingredients to make dinner, a local spot that was warm and cozy, perfect for a weeknight meal, as well as celebrating a special occasion. On every shelf you will find authentic, hard-to-find Italian ingredients, and in every corner, you will discover a playful design element, whether it’s a carefully chosen piece of art, a vintage map of Italy, or custom wallpaper featuring woodland animals peeking out, including our signature fox.

La Tana is attached to Pepino’s, which is our Italian-American concept, and the complete opposite in concept. Having the two restaurants connected, old world and new world, makes it truly unique and the energy undeniable. What makes your pasta special? Our pasta program is special because the fresh pasta is made daily in the caffè, in view of guest dining and shopping. Our skilled pastaio are always making different types of pasta, and are happy to answer questions on how to cook at home, or what tools are best for trying pasta making at home. Our staff are incredible! It’s a rainy Vancouver evening… what’s the best to-go dinner in your caffe? Right now, I think the Steelhead is one of the best dishes in the company. It’s light, fresh, and the porcini butter is stuff dreams are made of. And you can never go wrong with the pasta feature, which changes every few days.

HOW TO COOK LA TANA’S FRESH & FROZEN PASTA 1. First, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over medium to high heat. Be sure to add a generous amount of salt as this will help to season the pasta and add flavour. 2. Once the water has reached a rolling boil, gently drop the fresh pasta into the pot. Gently stir the pasta right away to ensure it doesn’t stick together. 3. Your cooking time will depend on the thickness of your pasta but in general it will take between 2 and 4 minutes to cook all the way through. 4. When the pasta is done, remove it from the boiling water and serve with your favourite sauce. 5. Buon appetito!

“On every shelf you will find authentic, hard-to-find Italian ingredients, and in every corner, you will discover a playful design element.”

FLOURIST’S BUTTERMILK PANCAKES

In Conversation With Flourist Bakery HOME COOKING FOR COMMUNITY Meet Owner Shira McDermott

Tell us about Flourist’s design story. When we approached Ste. Marie with the idea and our new brand by Glasfurd & Walker, the aim was to create a space for community to gather around the flour mill. By focusing on the mill as the central idea, it has allowed us to always keep in mind our core reason for existing: as a communal place for folks to gather and feel warmth, hospitality, and the good feelings that come from our shared experiences with making and enjoying good food. “The aim was to create a space for community to gather around the flour mill.” What’s the inspiration behind your recipes? Our recipes have always been part of our goal of community building, and are meant to showcase how easy it is to adopt a plant- forward diet using basic building blocks like high-quality whole grains, legumes, and freshly milled flours. I was raised eating this way by parents who had very little resources to feed the family, so I am always inspired to share this knowledge, if it contributes to folks having more confidence in the kitchen with regards to preparing simple, nostalgic, vegetarian foods.

INGREDIENTS 1 cup Flourist Sifted Red Fife Flour 1/2 cup Whole Grain Red Fife Flour 3 tbsp sugar 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 1 1/2 cups buttermilk* 3 tbsp vegetable oil 2 eggs 1/2 tsp vanilla Oil or butter for the pan *Yogurt can be substituted for buttermilk or a combination of both

BUY THE FLOUR HERE

Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium-low heat. In a bowl, mix together dry ingredients. In a second bowl, beat eggs into the buttermilk, then stir in the oil. Gently stir this mixture into dry ingredients, mixing only enough to moisten flour; don't worry about a few lumps. If batter seems thick, thin with some milk. Place a teaspoon of butter or oil on griddle or skillet. When butter foam subsides or oil shimmers, ladle batter onto griddle or skillet, making pancakes of any size you like. Adjust heat as necessary; usually, first batch will require higher heat than subsequent batches. Flip pancakes after bubbles rise to surface and bottoms brown, after 2 to 4 minutes. Cook until second side is lightly browned. Serve, or hold on an ovenproof plate in a 200-degree oven for up to 15 minutes. Serve with fresh fruits in season, whip cream or yoghurt, plenty of butter, and your choice of syrup. These also make a great snack smothered in almond butter. Leftovers can be stored covered in the fridge.

AMENITIES VIBE WITH ALL YOUR WANTS

LEARN MORE HERE

East Van’s eclectic character spills into Eastward’s many amenities thanks to Ste. Marie. Like the best stories, spaces here are layered with details that draw you into a richer experience. Textures, colours, and patterns create a unique personality. Playful and purposeful features — a record player, too! — shape a lifestyle that holds your attention. Ascend to the Sky Lounge or stay close to the ground, amenities offer inspiring moments from top to bottom. The WFH and student crowd will gravitate to work stations on the roof, where productivity is fueled by fresh air and views. The roof also features opportunities to kick back when the work day is done — with lounge areas, a BBQ for al fresco dining, and fresh herbs and berries from the edible garden. Catenary

lighting makes for an enchanting scene when the stars pop out. Downstairs, the vibe in the Social Club is both homey and intriguing — an attractive space for all kinds of relaxation, celebration, or creation. Sip local craft beers, with album after album spinning in the background. Gather film friends together for a deep analysis on Scorsese. Barbeque cuts from the neighbourhood butcher out on the patio. Or rejoice with loved ones as you mark another year around the sun. And if you’re keen on wellness, there’s a fully-equipped gym that overlooks a courtyard. When the gym’s at home, you can easily slot a workout into the busiest of schedules.

TWO ERAS HOUSED SIDE-BY-SIDE

A CURIOUS NOTE The Edwardian style was

commonplace in East Van in 1910 — homes were built with wood from local sawmills, featured stained- glass window treatment, and felt cozy with a wood-burning fire billowing from a chimney.

Eastward’s got street presence and modern appeal. Multiple dimensions and colours add substance to its facade. A bold white frame stretches across the six-storey building, creating depth. A mix of materials resembles the look of brick, shingles, and wood to reflect the neighbourhood’s character. These nods to history are paired with real history. The Karme Residence, a charming heritage house built in 1910, is home to three suites at Eastward. Along with structural updates, the wood trim, veranda, roof, and

chimney have been restored. Later additions were removed to return the home to its historical shape. And a bay window has been moved from the side of the house to the back, creating more separation with Eastward’s main building. According to city records, the Karme Residence has been home to a carpenter, master mariner, school teacher, accountant, and mechanic — a variety of lives and stories woven into the neighbourhood’s fabric. Those who live at Eastward will become part of this textured history.
