EAST VAN

EAST VAN

The Rio Theatre opened its doors as cameras were rolling on the Wizard of Oz — 1938, to be exact. Since those early years, the East Van landmark has transformed from cinema to bowling alley and back to cinema — including a stint as the Golden Princess Theatre, when it screened Chinese films. But today it’s not just a place to watch a film. It’s become a cultural hub for dance, poetry, comedy, improv, and music. You may catch spoken word performed by John Waters, a David Lynch double bill, a Halloween-themed burlesque show, Oscars night, or a Q&A with Kevin Smith. You’ll buy tickets to films you loved when you were a kid and films released today. The Rio is a Vancouver icon — Seth Rogan and Ryan Reynolds agree — and it’s just down the street from your home at Eastward. CURTAINS UP ON CULTURE

What makes Commercial Drive special? Commercial Drive is special for its eclectic mix of cultures, shops, and restaurants. It’s always buzzing with energy, making it a great spot for people to gather and enjoy the atmosphere. Share a couple of favourite spots in the community. Two of my favorite spots are The Burrow for its delicious food and cozy ambiance, and the Rio Theatre , which brings a mix of films and live shows to the area. Both capture the unique, welcoming feel of the Drive. What’s the best name you’ve seen for a bowling team? “Gutter Up” stands out as a fun and clever choice! “Being part of this vibrant, diverse neighbourhood is a joy.”

WHAT TO ORDER FROM CONCESSION: Popcorn or a grilled cheese A can of Persephone lager, a slushie margarita, or a Baileys coffee

A CURIOUS NOTE The Rio Theatre used to be a bowling alley — owned and operated by the Marino family, too.

A CURIOUS NOTE In 2012, owner Corinne Lea took a stand against archaic liquor laws — she influenced a change that would allow alcohol to be served in all British Columbian movie theatres with a primary liquor license. It was a historic moment that also won her the Diamond Jubilee Governor General award. Raise your glass or can to her as you settle into your seat.
