I ROLL UP MY SLEEVES

Protecting the next generation

Are you a natural networker? No? Well remind yourself of the fact that very few people are, and when you think about it, it’s hardly surprising. Walking into a room full of strangers, explaining who you are and what you do in a matter of seconds, not to mention trying to avoid spilling a cup of coffee down your best shirt; the whole thing is fraught with risks and the chance to fail publicly. S o when an alternative form of networking comes along, it’s going to be of interest to quite a few people, as Glenn Hoddy, founder of I Roll Up My Sleeves is finding out. “It’s very definitely a business networking opportunity,” says Glenn. “But where we differ is that we get people together to work for a few hours on a practical activity within local community projects such as a hostel for the homeless or a training centre for disadvantaged young people. Groups that work together naturally will talk and connect in a relaxed and informal way. And the benefits for the community projects are huge.”

I Roll Up My Sleeves currently runs alternative networking events in Colchester, Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, and is hoping to expand to new venues across East Anglia. Glenn set up I Roll Up My Sleeves a year ago, as an alternative way of bringing businesses together to network, whilst giving something back to the local community. His inspiration came from seeing first-hand how difficult it was for a community farm in Suffolk to complete the everyday manual tasks needed to keep the farm running. “I could see that some of the expectations of what you can offer to traditional networking groups could be seen as off-putting. So I decided to bring the two things together to create an alternative method for developing business connections.” Keen to support the firm’s ethos around sustainability, staff from the insurance team at Scrutton Bland recently took part in two of the alternative networking events. Charity insurance specialist Barry Davis spent a couple of hours helping to lay a new floor at the Teapot Café in Ipswich, whilst senior partner Tim Mulley went along to assist at the former Dales pub in Ipswich which is now a thriving community centre run by the charity Emmaus for homeless people. “I needed to have the experience to ‘get it’,” says Tim. “The conversation was much more natural than at other networking events, and the whole experience works really well. It’s a great way to give something back.” Claire from Emmaus explains some of the benefits for the charity: “The changes the volunteers have managed to achieve are not just practical, but also emotional. The beneficiaries feel valued by the fact that these strangers are giving up their time to support them, and it helps to increase their self-worth which is a major step forward.”
