In the waning glow of August, an invitation hangs in the air, reminding us to enjoy the magic of quiet nights on a front porch, night time dips in the ocean, and evening walks with loved ones. Each step becomes a chance to cherish the dwindling daylight, encouraging us to slow down and savor these simple pleasures before they become distant memories. This month, we’re excited to introduce you to the Schatzman Family and hear their story, dating back several generations. We also learn about the Morro Castle, the cruise ship that caught fire in 1934 off our local coastline, and how residents of Spring Lake were among those that provided much needed help and assistance to survivors. In keeping with the theme of those that are there to help when the sirens sound, we’ll also hear from The Spring Lake First Aid Squad and learn more about their services and community involvement.

A STEP BACK IN TIME
Patrolman Lewis (Lou) Norris raced his Model-T Ford to meet them at the Coast Guard Station on Worthington Avenue. It soon became clear that Spring Lake would need to aid the survivors, many of whom leapt to their fate off the burning ship into the angry waters three miles offshore. FIRST RESPONDERS Around 6 am, Lifeboat No. 10 hit Spring Lake. Skeeter Yates and Stanley Truax, both young lifeguards, plunged into the waves to assist survivors. Hearing First Aid sirens, Dr. Patterson threw clothes over his pajamas, and after a call to police, went directly to the beach as so many others did to help. Dave Robinson and Captain Charles Brahn of the Spring Lake First Aid Squad each managed one of the two ambulances, a Packard and Studebaker. Three more Morro Castle lifeboats arrived on the shores of Spring Lake, while two boats beached in Sea Girt. Each boat was less than a quarter filled and predominantly held crew members. The other six boats never left the burning ship. A TOWN EFFORT As the day unfolded, travelers who had jumped into the water were rescued by local fishing boats, while others, due to prevailing currents, arrived ashore. Many citizens, including Maria Marucci, volunteered at triage centers around town. Miss Madeliene Clancy, secretary of the Spring Lake Red Cross, played a vital role collecting and distributing blankets, clothing, and food, as well as connecting survivors with their families. She worked tirelessly for two days straight. Shore residents and innkeepers opened their homes to the weary and exhausted. Dr. Louis Albright and his family tended to many survivors in their home on Madison Avenue. Mr. & Mrs. Cecil Horseman took in an eight year old boy, Benny, until the Red Cross learned his mother and brother had been rescued and found in New York. Over seventy homes opened their doors until relatives found their loved ones. Local shops helped as well. The American Stores Co (ACME), provided coffee, sugar, and milk, while Vorhees bakery supplied bread and biscuits. Employees of the Essex and Sussex prepared endless sandwiches while Walter McManus, President of the Crown Cork and Seal Company, sent a dozen cases of whiskey to the First Aid building. Merchants offered clothing to the people who swam ashore half dressed or still in their nightclothes. KINDNESS, QUESTIONS, CONSPIRACY Spring Lake became a field hospital that day. The Spring Lake First Aid Squad, Police and Fire Departments, as well as local lifeguards, fishermen, and citizens, rescued almost 150 passengers and crew. One resident said, “Of the many memories I have of

THE MORRO CASTLE
BY KATIE SCHRADER - EDITOR A Reflection 90 Years Later
First Responders and citizens rushed to the beaches to help people on the lifeboats.
I am not an investigative reporter. I reluctantly remind myself of this whenever I delve into research. Still, disappointment lingered as I reiterated this while reading about Morro Castle, a luxurious ocean liner that ran aground September 8, 1934, resulting in 137 lost lives. I stumbled upon a labyrinth of conspiracy theories surrounding the popular ship which allowed travelers to circumvent prohibition laws while also transporting U.S. mail to Cuba under a lucrative government contract. Theories suggest arson, insurance fraud, a mutinous crew, and even a government cover-up. Rife with controversy, the story features an alleged corrupt radio operator, initially hailed as the hero but later suspected to be the villain. Riveting as it is, this article will not solve the nearly century-old mystery. Experts have written books attempting to unravel the case. However, my exploration rekindled another worthy tale of compassion, teamwork, and bravery, sprinkled with some conspiracy. MORRO CASTLE ABLAZE On the last night of the cruise back from Havana to Manhattan, the ship faced a nor’easter complete with gale force winds and turbulent seas. In the first hours the next day, a fire broke out in a storage locker and quickly spread.

the Morro Castle disaster, I will always remember the kindness of our people the most.” So, while many unanswered questions and theories continue to be reignited to this day, an undercurrent story of a town coming together to offer solace and respite to all those who suffered remains. (For anyone interested in the conspiracy theory part, read Inferno at Sea by Deborah C. Whitcraft or Morro Castle by Robert McDonnell and Fred Rosmussen. As McDonnell said, “This story is not over.”)
Mysteriously, Captain Robert Wilmott who had ordered the smoke detection system to be turned off three days prior, died hours before the fire started. Around 3am, 100 pounds of gunpowder aboard the Morro Castle exploded, scattering fire, smashing windows, and awakening people on land. THE SIGHTING On shore, summer residents Mr. Walter McManus and his son spotted the flaming ship in the darkness and quickly alerted local police.

the patient’s dress shirt was staged, the squad seamlessly transitioned into actors, providing emergency care for the “victim.” Answering the Call(s) Today, each squad member carries a special beeper. Crew members assemble quickly at the Washington Ave building and head to the scene. However, this was not always the case. In the early days, emergency calls were signaled by a whistle at the water plant on Monmouth Avenue. Two original members, Stanley Truax and Robert Todd, often sprinted through backyards to respond. One night their shortcut didn’t go as planned. “We always took the same route, cutting through yards, and someone had put up a fence. It was about 10 at night, and we smashed into that fence. We didn’t make that call!” Call of Duty Volunteers are essential for the safety and security of our town. By joining the squad, “you are connected to your local community. You join the police, firemen and other first responders helping your neighbors on their worst day. A kind word or holding someone’s hand in the ambulance is often the best medicine,” explains Vice President Eileen McMahon. The squad also finds time to enjoy themselves at BBQ’s, holiday parties, and many local community events. No first aid experience? No problem. The squad provides on the job training. Volunteers can explore various aspects of the job and train at their own pace, making a significant impact right away. Spring Lake and Spring Lake Heights are proud of their First Aid and Emergency Squad. As we approach our centennial celebration, we eagerly welcome new members to join in our legacy of service.
“The squad fits conveniently into your life. You respond when you’re available. It also gives you tremendous satisfaction to know you’re assisting your neighbors in their time of need.” -TOM WALSH

at sea in 1934 and being the second squad to arrive at the Hindenburg tragedy in 1937, where they transported German captain, Ernest Lehman to the hospital. Heroes in Action: By Sea The squad gathered at its Washington Avenue headquarters on the eve of Hurricane Sandy ready to respond. Many calls came throughout the storm’s intensity and all were answered. Most notable was a dramatic water rescue of an elderly couple. Current Captain, Howard Rockhill and President Andrea Rodgers, with the help of both Spring Lake fire departments, navigated nearly neck- high water and underwater obstacles to bring a boat to their rescue. The man was found floating on his mattress, and both were brought to safety earning the gratitude of their 22 grandchildren. And By Land The squad’s presence during the Spring Lake Five proved life-saving
for one runner who suffered cardiac arrest at the finish line. Having landed “in spitting distance” of the first aid squad and paramedics, the runner was defibrillated and within seconds popped up asking, “what just happened?!” The runner survived but his finishing time remains a mystery! Beach rescues are also part of their duties. After word spread of a missing girl likely being buried alive, a nearby group formed a circle around where she had been digging. Lifeguards, police, and first aid members joined beach goers, all furiously digging. After the little girl was spotted, a mouthful of sand was quickly removed, oxygen was provided, and she was saved. Unexpected Moments Not all calls are life-threatening. One memorable incident involved responding to a “murder” at the Warren Hotel, which turned out to be a staged event for a mystery theater. Once it was realized the red stain on
At the core of Spring Lake’s legacy is a community steeped in service. From its earliest days, the success of this community has been rooted in the dedication of its people. This enduring spirit is evident in so many of our organizations, especially the Spring Lake First Aid and Emergency Squad. A History Founded in 1928, the First Aid and Emergency Squad is celebrating its 96th anniversary. Serving Spring Lake and Spring Lake Heights, the squad responds to over 1,000 calls annually, which represents over 2,000 volunteer hours. Today, it is one of the nation’s oldest running First Aid Squads. Remarkable Early Achievements The early days of the squad saw calls ranging from a cut toe to finding missing persons and, even once, assisting in a search for an escaped prisoner! Notable events include providing a field hospital after the Morro Castle’s devastating fire
“Being able to help residents and visitors of SL and SLH has brought me comfort knowing that I was able to make an awful situation better. I joined the squad in 1982 and have never regretted my decision. It’s awesome to be able to help someone in their time of need.” -MARGIE BRAHN
Early on, members wore aprons from the 3rd Ave butcher shop donated by Ellis “Piggy” Height’s father, an original member. Later, the squad wore white coveralls and today they often wear hoodies, both shown here.

These Groundings of Home
When the afternoons of August begin to flip through the dog-eared pages of summer, shuttling the yellowed light of these remaining summer hours between flashback and reverie, you may be drawn into thinking that it is high time to have a few Figs. Tomatoes certainly share this season’s savory spotlight, however as the first fruit to be cultivated by humans, or so the scholars tell us, Figs have for millennia shared this heirloom quality, dropping

golden hour, when the air begins to cool and the sky swirls with color. This signified that it was time for dessert. Merritt and her grandfather Joseph would walk into town and make a visit to the 3rd Avenue Chocolate Shop for an ice cream or a handful of nonpareils, a place Merritt so enjoyed as a child that a short bike ride up Morris Ave as a teenager would find Merritt behind those same glass displays serving sweets to many a summer traveler. Just a few small-town proprietors away, Rob grew up on North Main Street in Manasquan, down the block from his Grandparent’s shoe store, Raffetto’s Shoes, which was in business for over 100 years before closing in 2009. Rob’s grandmother Vera fondly recollects afternoons when her parents would send her on “errands” behind that store, bending branches and hopping vines in search of ripe vegetables, in what were acres of gardens stretching all the way back to what is now Church Street. There was much growing to do. His parents, Robert and Nancy, have six children, Rob being the oldest. His mother Nancy is also one of six. His grandmother Vera, now 99 years young, has 23 grand and 32 great-grandchildren. And so there is more growing to come. If time holds steady, many of those great
grandchildren will become 4th generation Manasquan High School students sometime in the late 2030s. Missing these groundings of home, Rob and Merritt clicked their heels and moved back to the beach fromNew York City in 2016, days before their first baby boy was born. They moved onto Atlantic Ave in 2019 where they are raising four boys – Lachlan (8), Declan (6), Callum (4), and Cormac (2). You may find clues as to where these Schatzman boys have been by the milk chocolate fingerprints they leave on post or park, stemming from their frequent trips to that same 3rd Avenue Chocolate Shop, and Rob still wishes that his Grandparents shoe store was open for the business of supplying an endless outgrowth of sneakers. Besides enjoying the spoils of this inheritance of their Mom’s sweet tooth, the boys love bike rides to the beach aka Mercer Ave bubble, exploring the mysteries of the hidden Fairy Garden of Atlantic Ave, traveling in the back of the bucket bike to Sundae Times, or now and again
GUTTER CLEANING • WINDOW CLEANING SIDING CLEANING • PAVER CLEANING SOFTWASH • PRESSURE WASHING LOW PRESSURE ROOF WASHING they may ask for a wagon ride around the block, what Declan calls “Nature Walks”, where you can find them playing “I Spy” or counting birds by song or color or shouting out the “Number Game” by tallying the mailbox numbers as they go by. These late summer weeks read to us those familiar stories of childhood, when the days went unnumbered and we didn’t feel like we had to package everything in a photograph or whip out our phones to trap a memory. Rob remembers early evenings spent waiting for his Pop Pop to flip the “Closed” sign on the shoe store. He’d go out back and sit on the steps underneath the shade of a Fig tree his great grandmother had planted among those rolling gardens and think about something his Mom would always say about those August figs, “have a bite”, she’d say, “they taste better than candy”. Yes, late August, you are better tasting than candy, with your sugary dawns and wandering dusks, the spokes of yesteryear circling in our minds. We are all out here returning to our roots, tasting the sun turn fruit to honey, and watching as these small histories unfold.

their fruit and bestowing their shade across ancestries. A return to the root, if you will. One will usually find the most fantastic tasting figs in these lingering days of summer, and so it is in fruit and roots where we find the Schatzman family of Atlantic Ave here in Spring Lake, familiar soils for 5 generations on both Rob and Merritt’s family trees. Merritt’s maiden name is McKay, her father Matt and mother Jerri raised Merritt and her two brothers, Matt and Brian, on Morris Ave. Their family history in Spring Lake started in 1956, when Merritt’s great grandparents William and Genevieve Braun moved to Pitney Ave, which for many years held the title of Best Tire Swing in town. The heights of summer however were glimpsed from South End, where a Beach Day meant spending each and every one of those precious minutes on-sand. It was typical for the family beach chair circle to stay intact well into the
