Rockland is on for Terry Fox Run GREGGCHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

coordinator for Clarence-Rockland. “They were ecstatic,” he said, smiling. The two have gotten advice from Fran- çois Lalonde, organizer of the 2011 Terry Fox Run in Rockland. He was responsible for the initial effort to revive the local run, as the last regular community Terry Fox Fox in Rockland before last year was in 1997. Nowak has been involved for the past five years in organizing the school Terry Fox Run at L’Escale so he has taken on the promo- tion and sponsorship support part of the planning effort for the community run. La- croix, whose past experience includes run- ning in the annual Boston Marathon, took charge of designing the course route for participants. This year’s Terry Fox Run in Clarence-Rock- land features both the customary five-kilo- metre and 10-kilometre routes for hardier walkers and runners, and also the one-kilo- metre beginner’s route for children. A new addition is the 100-metre “toddlers run” for families with very young children up to the age of five or six, which is a feature at some other area Fox Runs and similar events. “In the spirit of Terry Fox, anyone can par- ticipate,” said Nowak. To sign up for the Terry Fox Run go online to www.terryfox.org and click on the Terry Fox Run link. The run starts from Parc Simon on Sunday, Sept. 16, 9 a.m. Registration and collection of pledge sheets and money is at 8 a.m., and drop-in participants are wel- come. There is also a Facebook page for the local event at www.facebook.com/ events/380149745390427. Cumberland-Orléans | Next week marks the official start of autumn so that means time for homeowners to start thinking about their fall cleanup projects. Registration for the Seventh Annual Fall Cleaning the Capital Campaign runs Sept. 14 to Oct. 15. Individuals and groups who send in their cleanup reports by the Oct. 31 online submission deadline have a chance to win prizes donated by this year’s cam- paign sponsors. The goal of the annual cleanup campaign is to promote community pride among neighbourhoods in the National Capital Region. Cleanup campaign projects feature either or both litter-collection patrols to graffiti-removal efforts. Registration for the campaign begins with picking a target area, whether a neigh- bourhood park, a ravine, river shoreline, bus stop, community path, or any other public area. Register the cleanup project online at www.ottawa.ca/clean or phone the munici- pal number at 311 or 613-580-2401. Campaign cleanup kits are available to all registered participants, including students doing their community hours. They include disposable vinyl gloves, garbage bags and leaf-and-yard waste bags, graffiti removal wipes, masks and gloves, along with infor- mation sheets. Rockland | There will be a Terry Fox Run in Rockland. Roman Nowak and Carl Lacroix guarantee it. Nowak (left in the photo) and Lacroix are teachers at Rockland’s L’Escale secondary school and they decided to take on the task of organizing the event when they read in the Aug. 30 issue of the Vision that there might not be a Terry Fox Run in the city this year. “I said, ‘We can’t let this fall,’” Nowak said. “In 2011 both my father and my mother-in- law passed away due to cancer, so this hits close to home for me.” Nowak contacted the Terry Fox Founda- tion the day after reading the Vision article and received approval as this year’s event

Roman Nowak (left) and Carl Lacroix are ready, able and eager to keep the flame burning bright in Clarence-Rockland and Terry’s Dream of a cure for cancer very much alive. They hope to see more runners, walkers and others turn out at Parc Simon this weekend for the Terry Fox Run.
