Cumberland | Want to toss rocks in pub- lic without getting in trouble? The Cum- berland Curling Club is looking for new blood to “take the hammer” and be will- ing, ready and able to “hurry hard” on the broom sweeping. The free curling clinic is part of the Oct. 13 Open House event at the Cumberland Curl- ing Club, starting 10 a.m., inside the club- house and rink at 935 Cameron Street. Participants get a “Curling 101” crash course on game basics, which include a run- down on general rules, curling etiquette, and strategy.

Then everyone heads out on the ice for hands-on instruction on throwing tech- nique, how to do a good sweep, and a bit of scrimmaging in a regulation recreational match. Space for the clinic is limited so early reg- istration is urged by email to cccurlingmem- bership@gmail.com or phone membership director George Mota at 835-2740. The 2012-2013 curling season for the club begins Oct. 15 and runs to April 2013. More information on club competition schedule and activities is available at www. cumberland.ovca.com.

Navan | Another junior A season has be- gun for the Cumberland Grads but both of the Sept. 7 weekend games have proven heartbreaker cases for the team. The Carleton Place Canadians edged out the Grads 4-3 at the Kanata Rec Complex last Friday evening. Then Smiths Falls stole the score from Cumberland 7-6 in over-time play Saturday. The Grads are in Hawkesbury this Friday evening against the Hawks at the Robert Hartley Arena. They return to the Navan Memorial Arena Sunday afternoon to host
