ISSUE 5

This includes setting controls to ensure that people have access to only the minimum amount of information required to perform a role. And, no program to guard against cyber crime will be successful if it does not have a consistent training cadence for staff so they can gain knowledge of what to look out for when nefarious actors try to get hold of valuable Payroll data. This should involve more than passive participation in IT-directed internal cybersecurity education. Payroll’s effort here includes maintaining an open dialogue with third parties and coordinating with their cybersecurity training, as well as with other departments and their specific roles in preventing breaches. Critical to all this is testing the incident response plan. For many employers, the IT security teams will run these types of exercises and there is an opportunity for the Payroll team to be involved with these kinds of exercises. External vendors can be hired to deliver the testing; inexperienced teams or smaller businesses should consider that expertise as it is extremely informative. The Cyber Response Toolkit and Webinars The GPA has a growing catalogue of information surrounding data breaches and how Payroll can and should be a big part of remediating any incidents. There are several webinars on the matter in addition to the toolkit.
