In late September, China’s State Council introduced new Network Data Security Management Regulations which are due to take effect from January 1, 2025. The new regulations address the increasing challenges of data security in today’s digital age with a legal framework for managing network data processing activities. At their centre is a focus on safeguarding the rights of individuals and organisations while ensuring national security and public interests. The regulations establish comprehensive guidelines on personal data protection, cross-border data transfers, and the responsibilities of internet platform providers. China Briefing offers an overview of the regulations, who will be subject to them and what these new responsibilities will entail, then considers their broader impact on China’s data security landscape.
Singapore’s Law and Home Affairs Ministry is set to propose new workplace fairness legislation (WFL) to parliament. The legislation is intended to create more equitable and inclusive employment practices. The proposed law will prevent employers from discriminating against employees based on protected characteristics and forms part of government’s commitment to maintaining racial and religious harmony and equality in the workplace. There is no current law to cover workplace discrimination in Singapore, meaning employers must refer to the country’s tripartite parties’ Guidelines for Fair Employment Practices when it comes to the fair treatment of employees. ASEAN Briefing summarises the key provisions of the new WFL and looks at how employers can prepare.
