Vankleek Hill Carnival
The annual VankleekHill Winter Carnival held it’s first ever baked beans contest. “We have had a chilli contest in the past,” explained Janice Renwick, recreation director at the Vankleek Hill arena. “This year we thought we would go with baked beans. We had five entrants. It was great. The kids had a lot of fun.” First place went to Louise Sproule of the Review, second place was awarded to Sonya Rickerd who runs the canteen at the arena, and third place was awarded to Gisele Paquette.The carnival took place over the weekend January 31 and February 1st. “It was very cold this year,” said Renwick. “But everyone had fun.” Public outdoor skating was part of the fun on Saturday, withmusic playing and followed by hot dogs and hot chocolate for the kids. The afternoon saw a co-ed broomball game and in the evening, a social gaming event was held, sponsored by the Skating Club and Scotia Bank. “Quite a bit of money was raised. It was great,” exclaimed Renwick. “It was all in good fun.” Brave souls were out on the ski trails Sunday afternoon with a skiing event put on by the Vankleek Hill Ski Vent Clic. “It went well,” said Renwick. “It was a beautiful day, cold, but nice.” (DH)
