GMO’s and Round up Ready

are,” said Vrain. “If you cannot make your own proteins, you die, quickly.” Vrain says glyphosates induce optosis in human cells and increase breast cancer growth. Vrain spoke of toxicology studies in rats where huge tumours developed after digesting Roundup Ready corn and water containing glyphosates. However, the paper was retracted one year after publishing. Accor-

the name of the author of this study. Vrain also spoke of correla- tion analysis between glyphosate and autism. He said there were

treated crops in North America, however, several other countries ban the use of gene- tically engineered foods. Several concerned citizens had ques- tions, some of which Vrain could not answer. One local dairy farmer said that perhaps the whole thing was just a marketing ploy by De Dell Seeds. Vrain wrote a letter to the Minister of Health asking Canada to act swiftly in joi- ning more than 60 governments who have legislated some form of labeling or to ban Roundup Ready crops as well as the Roun- dup herbicide.

LApproximately 100 concerned citizens gathered at the community centre in St- Bernardin on January 8 to get some infor- mation and peace of mind in regards to geneticallymodified foods and herbicides that contain glyphosates. De Dell Seeds sponsored the luncheonwith spokesperson retired genetic scientist and soil biologist Dr.Thierry Vrain, presenting information on the subject. “Personally, I think conventional corn is fine and we don’t need the expensive GMO research with its unknown side effects,” said Anton Heinzle, a local farmer and agent for De Dell Seeds. “I think the companies selling GMO seeds don’t provide all the information.” A geneticallymodified organism, simply put, is the result of taking DNA from one organism and forcing it into another. To some, this is a dangerous practice. To others, this is just the next evolution of life on our planet. A glyphosate is a wide spectrum herbicide used to kill weeds. Are glyphosates harmful? Vrain believes that the glyphosates contai- ned in Roundup, an herbicide patented by Monsanto, is extremely harmful and not meant for human or animal consumption. “We are now in the age of ‘Pharming’. We can make pharmaceutical everything, plants, animals, everything. It is genetic enginee- ring. We now have created Human Gene Therapy. Who among you would say no to save a child’s life with a genetic disorder?” “We have gone through a gene revolu- tion in the past 20 years,” said Vrain. “We now know how DNA works. We can take a human gene and put it into a fish or a tomato and it will work. That fish or tomato will contain a human protein. We canmake bacteria that can take CO2 and turn it into ethelyne or oxygen. We havemade a spider goat. We have taken a goat and injected a gene from a spider. The silk from a spider is stronger than steal. So now we have milk, which contains spider silk, which has huge industrial implications. Some of these things are good. Some are not.” “I amnot anti-scientist. I think the system is flawed. I amagainst Roundup Ready tech- nology,” said Vrain. “Roundup kills pretty much everything, so crops must bemodified to withstand the effects of the chemicals. Roundup Ready does not reduce the use of pesticides. If anything, it increases the use of pesticides.” Vrain explained that glyphosates were ori- ginally created as a demineralizer and des- caling agent in 1964. “It was used to clean up pipes and boilers,” described Vrain. “When they discarded the solution, they discovered it killed all the plants. Monsanto bought it as an herbicide and patented it as such in 1969.” Glyphosate was later patented in 2005 as an antibiotic because it is a biocide, something that kills insects, weeds, and gut bacteria. Although the way these chemicals affect the body can be quite complicated, Vrain is clear on the fact that glyphosates accumu- late in the soil and vegetation of Roundup Ready crops, making it impossible not to consume. He also said the chemical was ne- ver intended for human or animal consump- tion, creating a systemwhich finds it difficult to produce proteins. “It may be hard to hear but bacteria aremore sophisticated than we

significant increases in celiac disease, intestinal infections, thyroid, liver, bladder, pan- creatic, and kidney cancers, and kidney failures between 1990 and 2010. “Glyphosates make minerals bio-unavai- lable.” Vrain explained there is currently no regulation on gly- phosates or Roundup Ready
