T he N eed for C ompanions (7-12) W HEN the hatred of His enemies reached its climax, Jesus withdrew Himself from them (v. 7). It was a solemn hour when He and His disciples departed. By this act, He gratified the wish of His enemies, but in so doing He with drew from them their only possible hope of deliverance from their sinfulness and from eternal doom. As He retired from those who hated Him, the common people thronged about Him (vs. 7-10). But alas, they merely de sired physical benefits, not the spiritual good which they really needed more than anything else. So great was the crowd that He entered a small boat and put out from the shore in order to be able to address the people. He desired to speak to them. In His words life and power reside. The physical benefits connected with His minis try are merely the by-products of His work on man's behalf. When His teaching, that brings eternal life, is rejected, the power that meets the physical needs departs. Even the unclean spirits acknowledged His deity (vs. 11, 12). The Revised Ver sion says that “ whensoever they beheld him” they recognized Him for what He was. They cried out: “ Thou art the Son of God.” Only unbelieving men on earth deny Christ's essential deity; it seems plain from the Scriptures that none in heaven and none in hell have any doubts concern ing that great truth. The demons know and acknowledge that Jesus is the Son of God, but these facts do them no good. Knowing and acknowledging are useless without believing with that saving faith BLACKBOARD LESSON

which alone brings one to God. There are even many people among unbelievers to day who are just as sure of the deity of the Lord Jesus as were these demons, and they are as ready to acknowledge this fact also, but they continue unsaved because they do not receive Him as their personal Saviour. His works convince them, but their un belief remains (cf. true “following” in John 8:12; Hos. 6:3; Mk. 1:7). Jesus would not have the demons testify to Him, and He charged them not to make Him known. However true their testimony might be, it was an abomination unto God. Likewise is the sacrifice of the wicked; it cannot honor God nor forward. His work (cf. Prov. 15:8). Meeting great crowds of people with their varied needs, the Lord Jesus called unto Him companions in service: “ He ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach” (v. 14). The world still lies in darkness and in ignorance of the Lord Jesus Christ, and His purpose for believers is still that they shall be witnesses unto Him.
