Once a traveler, standing outside Cologne Cathedral, expressed his admiration of its beauty. “ Yes,” said a laborer, who was near, “ it’s a fine-looking building, and took us many a year to finish it.” “ Took you !” exclaimed the tourist. “Why, what had you to do with it?” “ I mixed the mortar, sir,” was the modest yet proud reply. The laborer had a right to feel that he had a share in the grand work. In the same way, by his consecrated service, every Christian can have a part in the work of building up the “ holy temple in the Lord.” —Adapted from A Modern Cyclopedia of Illustrations, by Hallock. Twelve Men Who Went with Jesus M ark 3:7-19, 31-35 Memory Verse: “ He that hath my com mandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me” (John 14:21). Approach: As the Lord Jesus went on healing the people and telling them that He could save them from their sins, the sees were thinking in their minds, and He knew what they were going to do to Him at the cross in a very few years. He knew this because He was God,- and this was part of God’s plan; and because He knew it, He did something about it. Lesson Story: From all over the country, people were coming to see the miracles which Jesus did. And whenever a crowd gathered, angry Pharisees came, too, and they tried to stir up trouble. The Lord Jesus must prepare for the future when He would no longer be with the people. It was at this time that He chose twelve of His followers to be His “ disciples.” They were to learn of Him and His mes sage and then to go about, as He had done, and tell it to others. W e already have talked about some of these men. There were Simon Peter and Andrew, and James and John, the four fishermen. And there was Matthew the taxgatherer. And there were seven others. They were different kinds of men, some better than others, but all of them Jesus chose. And what a difference it made to them when Jesus chose them! When they obeyed His will, how strong and powerful they became in doing His work 1 They truly became “ fishers of men” even as Jesus had promised them. The Lord Jesus is scribes and Phari sees b ecam e m ore and mo r e an gry. They were jealous of the way people fol lowed Him. They had always been the leaders in the Jews’ re lig io n , and now every one was fol lowing Jesus. Jesus knew what the Phari

Objects: A quart fruit jar, two-thirds full of water, an egg, a small quantity of ink, one-fourth cup of red gasoline (can be colored with bulletin red), and one-half cup of table salt. Lesson: W e will let this jar of water remind us of the world before sin entered. Adam and Eve were innocent until they ate of the forbidden fruit and became sin ners. Every one now is born with a sin ful nature because he is a descendant of Adam and Eve. W e will put a few drops of this ink in the water, showing how sin made thé world unclean. This is the way the world looks today to God, unclean ahdi sinful. This egg reminds me of a boy or girl in the world. Drop it into the water, and it will sink to the bottom. That is the way with individuals. Unless the power of God keeps them, they will sink to the bot tom in sin. Bad boys always want good boys to do the same evil thing that they themselves are doing. Sin loves company. This red fluid that I am pouring into the glass reminds us of the blood of Christ which cleanses from all sin. “Without shedding of blood is no remission”—no
