sending away of sin (Heb. 9:22). If we are to be saved, we must have faith in Christ, believing that His death for us— the shedding of His blood—will cleanse us from sin. The egg is at the bottom o f the glass, and the red fluid at the top. How can we get the individual to Christ for cleansing? I have in my hand a cup of salt. You will remember that Jesus said to His followers: “Ye are the salt of the earth” (Matt. 5:13).

Notice what happens when I put the salt, which represents the people who already know Jesus as Saviour, into the glass. (Stir with a spoon.) The salt causes the egg to rise to the red. God wants us to work together in bringing others to Christ. Each grain of salt helped to raise the egg. Jesus said, in Mark 3:35: “ For whoso ever shall do the will of God, the same is m y .brother.’*'

FEBRUARY 27, 1938 MEASURING A MAN’S WORTH M a r k 5:1-17

Mark 5:1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gada- renes. 2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 Who had his; dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: 4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cut ting himself with stones. 6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, 7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have 1 to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thon torment me not. 8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. 9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. 10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away oat of the country. . 11 Now there was there nigh unto the moun tains a great herd of swine feeding. 12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. 13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine; and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand,) and were choked in the sea. 14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went, out to see what it was that was done. 15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine. 17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts. Memory Verse: \ “ How much then is a man better than a sheep?” (Matt. 12:12). Devotional Reading: Psalm 8. Outline and Exposition I. T h e P ow er o f D em on s (1-10) ROM the record (cf. Mk. 4:35-41) it would appear that our Lord crossed the sea for the express purpose of bringing relief to one demonized man (Mk. 5:1, 2). After the man was delivered from BLACKBOARD LESSON

the power of the demons, Jesus immediate ly returned to the place from which He came (cf. Mk. 5:18-21). If there were no other record concerning demons except the account given in this passage, we would know that, while not being corporeal, they are supernatural be ings who think, plan, know, desire, have power, and in every respect reveal their possession of personality. The man de scribed in this portion of Scripture be longed in a neighboring community; he had a home there, and a circle of friends (cf. v. 19). But the demons had taken possession of him (through what channel we do not know), and had driven him forth from among other men. The demons exerted their supernatural strength and ferocity through the man, and no one could bind nor tame him (cf. vs. 3, 4 ). These words suggest. the methods which men adopt with many poor sufferers who are thought to be insane, but who in real ity are under the influence of demons. In early days we attempted to bind them and shut them up behind stone walls. Now that we are a bit more cultured and educated we attempt to tame them by calling in the psychiatrist. Each of these methods may have its beneficial use, depending upon the true nature of the affliction. But it must be remembered that in many cases the trouble is not entirely mental but demoniacal and must be approached from the spiritual standpoint. This man was controlled by the demons to such an extent that his identity was almost lost to him. They were in pos session not only of the man’s mentality, but also of the organs of his body. They im parted to him a suicidal mania, and with frenzy he cut himself with stones; they de prived him of his reason, driving him from his home and placing him among the tombs, causing him to tear his clothing from his body, and giving him no peace (v. 5). When the man would appeal to Jesus, the demons deprived him of expression. When he saw Jesus approaching, he had a glim- . mer of hope and a desire to gain deliver ance (v. 6). But before he could put his desire into words, the demons took control of him and uttered their own words through his lips (vs. 7-10). W e may feel assured that frequently the vile and blas phemous words sometimes uttered by sin ners, when approached by some Christian worker, are not their own but the words
