FEBRUARY 20, 1938 MAKING MY COUNTRY MORE CHRISTIAN

P salm 33:12; I saiah 11:1-5 Meditation on the Lesson

God’s standards for good government are the same in all ages and for all classes and races of people. There are certain basic principles which if adhered to by indi viduals or nations will bring the blessing of God. David realized this fact when he wrote: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” Those who recognize God as Lord, the Ruler of their lives, shall be made joyfu l; this is an immutable promise. Isaiah, looking through the telescope of prophecy, saw a government in which the will of God was perfectly enforced, and where there was universal peace because justice and righteousness reigned. He saw the millennial kingdom where the Ruler will be the Lord Jesus Christ who will set up His personal and direct reign for a thousand years, having taken full control over the earth as we know it now, an earth now diseased by the curse o f sin. Chris tians who know the Scriptures concerning Christ’s reign are eagerly anticipating that glorious ushering in of His kingdom in which He shall rule with perfect wisdom and righteousness, as beautifully explained in our Scripture reading. So perfect a King is He that righteousness and faithfulness are said to cover Him as garments. When He is in authority, “ The earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters that cover the sea.” Frequently we pray, “ Th y kingdom come” ; but do we grasp the scope and majesty of the actual, visible kingship of our once-rejected Saviour? We cannot expect ideal situations in govern ment until He comes whose right it is to rule, but we can take heed that we indi vidually are in the will of God, and that we are earnestly trying to reveal to those about us the great purposes of Christ, chief of which is salvation through His almighty name. A country is Christian in so far as the citizens of that country are genuine ■born- again believers in Christ. Unemployment problems, crime, social wrongs, intemper ance, and all the other evils which harass the moral constituent of our nation,’ would be remedied if the Lord Jesus Christ were ruling in the hearts o f all men and women. Thus we as Christian Endeavorers should be zealously preaching the gospel of. regen eration, not the gospel of reformation, which is at best temporary and" forced. Christian social service is merely an agency by which to reach the lost fot Christ and to demonstrate; His spirit of love and the desire to share another’s burdens for His sake. Reformation without the power of Christ is comparable, to polishing the watch case of a watch which has ceased to. run, when the mechanism of the watch is.out of order; shining up the outside will never affect the repair.. A re we trying to polish up the outside of our country, or are we leading souls to the Great Jeweler who knows how to renew the mainspring of their lives?

The comfortable home-made trailer of an A.S.S.U. Mis sionary and hisfamily gospel team. Note the roomy folding “ bedrooms ” at each end. Hundreds of unreached chil dren were organized into Bible Schools, and scores of decisions for Christ secured in a single summer's work.

A House onWheels - W as the 19 36 summer home o f Missionary, L. L. Knapp and his family Gospel Team. They spent ten weeks, about two weeks in a place, in intensive Sunday School and evangelistic work among the un reached communities of the Dakotas, with warm welcomes everywhere. The children in each community were much interested in the “ cute little house,” as they called the trailer home. A previously announced Daily , Vacation Bible School was conducted in each locality. , Once well started the mothers said they “just couldn’t keep the children home” . Evening evangelistic services were held and night after night the interest grew. A special young peoples’ evening was announced, and Mr. Knapp’s oldest son brought the message. At the close, a number of young men and women came forward to take their- stand for Christ. On Bible School Demon- stration Nighty, the school house was packed to the doors, -with-listeners at the open windows. Similar interest in the work was manifest on every occasion during the summer’s campaign..

Under the trained supervision of earnest A.S.S.U. Mission aries, thousands of Sunday Schools are operating in other wise unreached corners all over the United States. Hun dreds of Daily Vacation Bible Schools are being conducted every summer. There are in creasing numbers of Youth Bible Conferences with scores of decisions for Christ. Every year abandoned churches are being reorganized and turned over to #their respective de nominations. The youth of unreached rural America is the chosen field of the A.S.S.U. Evangelical in purpose, non - sectarian in method, and true to the Word of God, for more than a cen tury we have carried on a quiet program of aggressive evangelism. Our work is exert ing a tremendous nation-wide ,impact for righteousness. Your church or Sunday School may easily fellowship in this mis sionary project — use the coupon .
