Are we w illing to do the will of God? I believe that the secret of half the doubts in the world is that we are not doing the will of God. If any one in darkness and doubt is following the light which he has, and is really longing for more light, and is allowing no known sin to be on his con science, and is praying, so far as he can pray, for more light, he shall know, and he does know at last, that the doctrine is of God.—A. "For the work of Christ he [Epaphro- ditus] was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service to ward me” (Phil. 2:30). The Lord calls men with the spirit of Epaphroditus. That spirit will be required, for the life of uttermost service cannot be called comfortable. “ Comfort is that stealthy thing that enters the house as guest, and then becomes a host, and then master. . . . Though its hands are silken, its heart is of iron. Verily, the lust for comfort murders the passion of the soul, and then walks grinning to the funeral.” It is true; but it is one thing to applaud it as truth, and quite another to turn from that lust that murders the passion of the soul for the sake of these for whom Christ died. But no one who has done so would exchange this way of living for any other. —From Gold Cord by Amy Carmichael. "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with an other, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). There are two links that bind you to Christ. There is your union with Him, and your communion. Your union with Christ is a link, a chain, that is forged in heaven, and no man can break it; thank God it is an eternal link between my soul and my ’ Saviour. But my communion— oh, what a delicate thread! One known sin persisted in and my communion is broken. . . . Make it the habit o f your life ever to get into the light . . . . of His will, so that day by day, hour by hour, you will know the cleansing power of the precious blood o f Christ sweeping through your heart. That is the only way of victory! —A. L in d sa y G legg . FEBRUARY 12 A ll G lorious W ithin “ The King’s daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold. She shall be brought unto the King in rai ment of needlework” (Psa. 45:13, 14). It is an easy and well-worn metaphor to talk about people’s character as their dress. W e speak about the “ habits” of a man, and we use that word to express both his cus tomary manners and his costume. . . . So here, without any departure from the well- trodden path of Scriptural emblem, we can not but see in the glorious apparel the fig ure o f the pure character with which the bride is clothed. . . . The true Christian character, which will be ours if we really are the subjects of that divine love, will be lustrous and snowy as the snows on Her- mon, or as was the garment whose white ness outshone the neighboring snows when He was “ transfigured before them.” — A l ex a n d er M a c l a r e n . FEBRUARY 15 Waiting, Looking for Him " Unto them that look for him shall he ap pear” ( Heb. 9 :28). Christians who are not looking and long ing for Christ to come are abnormal Chris tians. The child whose mother is away looks with anticipation for the mother’s re turn; and shall we not love His appearing? W e fear that many Christians are so deep ly engrossed in the world and its treasures that they would fain stay down here. They are allowing the glitter of gold to keep them from the glow of His glory. The earthly city is shutting out their view of the city that is heavenly. Such believers will suffer loss at Christ’s return. —R. E. N eig h bou r . The act of a moment is not enough. The impulse, like an electric current, needs to be Continuous, or as the word used by our Lord implies, step by step. How many a soul ekes out a dreary, useless existence, based upon the experience of a conversion fifteen or twenty, or even more, years ago. But what is the Lord to you today? Has there been a fresh access of joy in your sal vation today? The day in which you were saved you received an impulse from the eternal life of God, and that impulse is, from its very nature, eternal, always pro gressing.—A. T . S ch ofield .
