June 12, 1949 WHAT DO YOU PLAN FOR THIS SUMMER? Matt. 25:14-3»; Jer. 8:20

Some plan for the glory of God and others for themselves. The summer-time is usually given over to pleasure in which God is omitted. The Christian, however, will use the sunshine, the balmy breezes, the hills, and the lakes as an opportunity for refreshing and reviving his own soul, and for bringing blessing to many others. The summer is a wonderful time for receiving a new inspiration from heaven and new occu pations on the earth. It is a time of leisure when hearts are responsive and souls are receptive. We Should Build Up Ourselves Jude 2» We need to build our lives. We need a good foundation for our faith, trust, peace, and joy. That foundation is Christ Jesus. We need a furnace in that build ing to keep us warm for God and glow ing with the gospel. We need a dining room in that building for our souls must be fed on the living bread. There must be a music room so that we can be singing the new song of praise to our Lord. We must also have a library so that we will not be ignorant of Satan’s devices, or of God’s rich pro visions. There must also be a bedroom for rest lest we become too weary to be profitable. And there must be light on our pathway. We Must Build Others Acts 2»:32 Our lives should be filled with valu able knowledge to be wisely given for the blessing and benefit of others. The weak need to be built up in strength. The discouraged need to be cheered. The indolent need to be energized. The blind need to see. The defeated need to be given a vision. All of this precious ministry is entrusted to the Christian as Those who addict themselves to liquor sell themselves out body and soul to this cruel deceiver. Alcohol is a curse to the body, the mind, and the soul- It is an anesthetic to things that are lovely, godly and holy. It creates love for lust and every wicked thing that Satan offers to human hearts. Those who drink liquor lose their regard for the feelings of others and for the rights of their fellowmen. Liquor dulls the senses, de stroys the nervous system, and is a slow poison for all the body. Liquor destroys the beauty and sweetness of womanhood and the nobility and strength of man hood. Liquor Leads to Sin Eph. 5:12 The tavern is the scene of con spiracy, riot and murder, and the breed ing place of divorce and hatred. Most cities have more taverns than churches. M A Y , 1 9 4 9

a “ steward of the manifold grace of God.” The summer time is ideal for this precious work. Away from the cares of the office and the home we may quietly assist in the growth of others. We Must Build the Church 1 Cor. 3:10 When the ice and snow disappear, most excuses for not doing Christian work disappear also. God’s people are free in the summer time for all the serv ice and ministry which the church re quires. Not only is there physical work to be done in the building which houses the church, but visits need to be made; backsliders must be restored; the lan guid should be visited and encouraged to take part in the many activities of the church. The summer offers a time for developing teachers and musicians and youth programs. In the summer most restrictions are removed so that the church can do whatever it nleases. Let us earnestly seek to build it up. We Must Build God’s Work 1 Tim. 4:15 There are many angles of Christian ministry: “ The Rural Bible Crusade”— “ The Home Bible Association”—“The Family Altar League”—“ The Bible Med itation League”—these are just a few of the many lines of ministry which are profitably followed in the summer time and throughout the year. Street meet ings may be held as well as cottage meetings on the lawn. Camping trips may be arranged with the unsaved to get them away from people and alone with God. Automobile drives may be planned wherein the unsaved can be reached as the car travels through the hills. Each Christian should select some spiritual activity for the glorv of God in the summer time. Taverns are open constantly while the church is open occasionally. The tavern charges a high price for that which the sinful body craves. Under the influence of liquor, evil pleasures are devised for the destruction of others and for rob bery of every kind. Political plots are hatched and physical violence practiced. Liquor arouses every sinful passion in the body and suggests an outlet for it. Liquor Leads to Sorrow Prov. 23:29 It is not the “take home” pay which is inadequate; it is the “ get home” pay that causes the trouble. The tavern is the trap between the shop and the home. Here, amid blasphemy, filthy language, quarrels, and riot, money is spent which belongs to the wife and babies at home. Here men meet other women who never should come into their lives; then jeal-
