Very early upon the morning of the third day, Sunday, certain women who dearly loved their Lord came to the tomb that they might anoint His body with fragrant spices. The stone which had sealed the opening of the tomb had been rolled away! The Saviour was gone! As the women talked, two men in shining garments stood by them and told them that their Lord had arisen from the dead even as He had promised. All of life was changed for the disciples —and for Christians in all ages—be cause the Saviour lives. Paul told some Christians what would be true if God’s Son had not risen from the dead (1 Cor. 15). The preaching of the gospel is in vain, Christians’ faith is in vain, Christians are yet in their sins, and those who have died in Christ are lost—if Christ did not arise from the dead. “ But now is Christ risen from the dead . . . The Lord is risen indeed” ! victorious living. “ Because I live, ye shall live also” (John 14:19). The Resurrection Provides a Faithful Leader (Mark 16:7) The angel told the women to tell the disciples “ and Peter” that Jesus would go before them into Galilee. The resur rected Lord would go “ before” them. Even before Peter who had denied his Lord. What a message of encourage ment to this erring disciple! The Resurrection means we have an omnipotent Lord who goes before us through all life’s experiences. “When he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them” (John 10:4). He goes be fore in service, sorrow, trial, perplexity, misunderstanding, crossbearing, even death. As we follow Him, no harm can befall us.
Helps for the Children A Sad Day Becomes Glad Mark 15:15-47; Luke 23:27-43, 46; 24:1-6; John 19:25-37 Memory Verse: “The Lord is risen indeed” (Luke 214:34). Jesus’ enemies had succeeded in putting Him to death. His disciples were frightened, discouraged, lonely, and sad. The enemies had dressed the Saviour as a King, placed a crown of thorns upon His head, and pretended to honor Him before His crucifixion. Later, they had nailed Him to the cross. Many of those who loved Him watched as their Lord died to take away the sin of the world. At evening, a friend of Jesus lovingly cared for His body and placed it in a grave or tomb. All hope was gone from the hearts of Jesus’ disciples. Their Lord was dead! He would never rule the kingdom in which they had dreamed of having a part. Dr. William Evans tells of meeting a Mohammedan traveler somewhere in Galilee. Dr. Evans was asked his destin ation. He responded that he was going to Jerusalem to see the tomb where Jesus was buried. “ Oh, there is nothing there. The tomb is empty,” replied the Mohammedan. “ I am going to Mecca to see Mohammed’s tomb. We have some thing there. The Prophet is there.” The Mohammedan spoke the truth. Christ’s tomb is empty. There is nothing there. The Prophet’s body lies dead. He had no power to raise it to life again. But our Lord rose as He promised. That fact is the Gibraltar of the Christian faith. We propose to see what is the practical meaning of Christ’s resurrec tion in this week’s lesson. The Resurrection Opens Closed Doors (Mark 16:2-6) After death, the body of Jesus was laid in Joseph’s tomb in which no man had yet been laid. A great stone was placed over the opening of the grave. It was then sealed shut and a guard set to make sure no one stole the body away (Matt. 27:66). Three women were wending their way to the tomb on the first Easter morning to do further honors to the body of their Loved One. It suddenly dawned on them that the door of the sepulchre would have to be opened. “Who shall roll us away the stone from the door?” (16:3). The door was already open. An angel told them Jesus was risen from the dead as He said He would. Since that day the resurrection of Christ has been opening closed doors— those of salvation, of all subsequent resurrections, of hope of immortality, of
