SPOTLIGHT ON AVS TEACHING EXCELLENCE: Mamie Pepper & Chloe Scholes at the California Kindergarten Conference This year, we proudly celebrate kindergarten teachers Mamie Pepper and Chloe Scholes for their exceptional contributions to innovative education. They showcased one of their co-designed STEAM lessons at the California Kindergarten Association Conference, inspiring educators nationwide. Their journey began with a proposal submission to share insights on the engineering and design process using Lego materials to foster creativity and critical thinking. Their presentation demonstrated how Lego blocks can transform classrooms into hubs of exploration and ideation. Originally developed to teach measurement, Mamie and Chloe’s lesson evolved over two years to include building with Legos, counting, cardinality, and blueprint drawing, ensuring a comprehensive STEAM experience. They also created Lego character cards to help students empathize with characters and design spaces based on their needs, such as Bernie the Baker, whose kitchen required specific features like ovens and counters. Students then filled out order requests for the necessary Legos.
