Low back pain is one of the most commonly experienced ailments among patients. In fact, just about everyone will deal with back pain at some point in life. It is estimated that one-half of all Americans experience lower back pain annually, and it is considered to be the leading cause of workplace disability worldwide. It is also one of the most common reasons that people miss work and it is the second most common

pick up boxes. The pain you experience may either be acute or chronic, depending on how it was sustained. Acute pain means that it lasts for a short time and is usually severe. Chronic pain means that it lasts generally three months or longer and it can either cause dull or severe persistent pain. The pain you experience is typically either rooted in your back muscles or the bones in your spine. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, some other factors that may contribute to your back pain include: • Degenerative disc disease. • Lumbar spinal stenosis. • Fractures. • Sciatica. At your initial consultation, your physical therapist will ask you several questions regarding your medical history, lifestyle, and painful area(s). This information will assist your physical therapist in determining what exactly is causing your back pain so you can be provided with the best treatment plan for your needs. It is likely that your physical therapist will also assess your posture, coordination, strength, balance, flexibility, blood pressure, and/or heart rate, depending on your pain and symptoms. This will all help in determining the best course of treatment for your condition. • Herniated disc. • Osteoarthritis. • Osteoporosis.

What’s causing my back pain? There are a large number of conditions that can result in back pain. HOWCAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

Physical therapy is a great resource for lower back pain because it addresses the cause of the pain, rather than simply attempting to hide the symptoms. Working with a physical therapist can help improve your range of motion, restore strength to the muscles in your lower back that may have weakened from lack of use, and reduce the tension in your lower back muscles through targeted manual therapy techniques. When working with a physical therapist, you may also be guided through different lifestyle changes that you can make, in order to overcome back pain with everyday activities. These may include: • Making changes to the type of shoes that you wear so your back is getting more support with each step. Sometimes, using special insoles can significantly improve your back pain. • Adjusting your sleeping habits, or perhaps investing in a new mattress so your back has more support at night. • Using more lumbar support at work or on your commute by using a special chair or chair cover. Low back pain can pose limitations to your daily life, but you don’t need to live with those limitations any longer! At Advanced Rehabilitation, we can provide you with the ideal treatment for low back pain.
