The Challenge
Birmingham City University (BCU) is a large, modern, comprehensive university lo- cated in the UK’s second city. The university and its students permeate Birming- ham and are an essential element of the city’s growth and success. In 2021/22 the University enrolled 30,285 students studying in Birmingham, of which 18,817 were home undergraduates, and 998 international students. Birmingham is a superdiverse city, with 51% of the population being from Black, Asian, or other minority ethnic groups. BCU’s student profile reflects the diversity of the city and region – with 60% of undergraduate students identifying as Black, Asian or from other global majority backgrounds. Equally significantly, the university’s undergraduate intake is drawn from some of the most economically deprived neigh- bourhoods in the UK, with 64% of young entrants coming from areas of high-income deprivation (IDACI quintiles 1 and 2); while over half commute from the family home, rather than being based in student accommodation.” Birmingham City University Students’ Union, or BCUSU, is a charity with a purpose; to empower students with the means to shape their own lives. Our priority is to make sure our students have the most fulfilling and rewarding experience during their time enrolled at the university. With an ever-changing student population, we need to constantly innovate and re-discover ourselves to ensure that we remain rel- evant and at the fore front of higher education. We are looking for the new Chief Executive to drive the future direction of the SU, challenging the university and status quo. We want to be the voice of our students, taking purposeful, impactful and action orientated decisions that enable us to drive change and do things differently. We want to ensure that diversity and inclusion is at the forefront of ourthinking and we represent our student population
