The Song

By CAROLYN McCORMICK

m i , m B obby LARSEN was c a l l e d of his few years and small body, he was the most beloved of all the boys and girls who went to that school. He had smiling blue eyes, and when he sang, his voice was sweet and clear. Mrs. Thomas, t h e schoolteacher, would s o m e t i m e s remark to her friends, “Tiny is just like an angel— If you can imagine an angel in patched overalls.” It was through Mrs. Thomas that Tiny came to be like “ an angel,” for she had taught him, as well as the rest of the school, “The Song.” Mrs. Thomas longed to tell her pupils about the Lord Jesus Christ who loved them. But the local school board had said that teachers were not to speak about Jesus at all in their school rooms. Poor Mrs. Thomas was very upset about this rule, because she felt it was more important for boys and girls to learn to know Christ as their Saviour than it was for them even to learn the alphabet. She prayed that God would help her find a way to tell the pupils about Jesus. One day, while she was looking through a public school song book, she found the answer to her prayer. There, in the book was the song, “Jesus Loves Me.”

How the boys and girls loved that song! Often the pupils would say, “Mrs. Thomas, let Tiny sing ‘The Song’ for us.” So Tiny would get up, his blue eyes smiling, and would sing in a clear voice: “ Jesus loves me! This I know, For the Bible tells me so.” Tiny not only sang the song, but he believed with his heart that the Lord Jesus loved him and died for him. He had opened his heart’s door and asked the Lord Jesus to come in and be his own Saviour. And the Lord Jesus came in, just as He promised. More than that, the Lord Jesus used Tiny to help others to know about the Saviour. It happened this way.

“Oh, why didn’t I know before that this song was here!” she exclaimed. The next day during music class, she taught the song to- her pupils. (Surely the school board could not complain, for the song was in a pullic school song book.)
