Good News Dec. 22, 2025

It's been a fun and festive week at the Ann & Chuck Dever Regional Park Recreation Center! Our loyal crafters created tiny memory boxes full of whimsical holiday cheer. Our two newest dance programs are taking off, pulling big numbers for both Dance 2B Fit and Shine Dance Fitness! Our patrons have been loving these fun cardio workouts. Most excitingly, we welcomed 17 campers for our first day of Winter Break Camp! This is our first Winter Break Camp since Hurricane Ian, and our kids and staff had a blast, especially with our winter crafts. The campers are very excited for Tuesday's pajama party! Happy Holidays from Ann & Chuck! Ann & Chuck Dever Regional Park Recreation Center

Harold Avenue Regional Park Recreation Center

With playoffs right around the corner, basketball has been amping up at HARP. There are 26 slam dunk teams playing in this year's league, the turnout has been more than we have hooped for. A new program that’s been having people swing by has been our Jazz and Hip-hop dance class Friday nights! 12 dancers have been rehearsing regularly to perform at the basketball playoffs! Our winter camp has 15 kiddos. They’ve been enjoying the games and activities, such as musical chairs and bingo. Can’t go wrong with snacks like our fresh popcorn popped right here in the center. Pickleball is going strong with 20 regulars, and both adult and youth basketball have seen 22 shooting hoops. Table tennis is maintaining a steady course with 10 people. Volleyball is an Ace with 9 ballers. Intro to Sports Baseball has two more weeks and has 7 future sports professionals signed up. Silver Sneakers had 20, Zumba 5, Pilates 6, and Bonsai had 9.

Centennial Park Recreation Center We are excited to share that this weekend we held our sixth annual Winter Wonderland event. Our spaces were transformed into Santa’s Workshop, Whoville, and a giant snowball fight area, creating a fun and memorable experience for guests of all ages.

So far this week, the Rec Center has stayed active and engaging, with 86 Pickleball participants keeping the courts busy. We also welcomed 14 Mahjong participants, enjoying friendly competition and social time around the tables, along with 3 Ballet participants, adding a touch of focus and grace to the week’s programming. The Community Center hosted an Elvis tribute singer performance on Saturday night, bringing classic hits, plenty of nostalgia, and a whole lot of toe-tapping to the room. The crowd enjoyed an evening of timeless music —and yes, there were definitely a few “thank you, thank you very much” moments along the way.

Parks & Natural Resources

Land Management

This week staff continued exotic/invasive treatments at multiple properties including Charlotte Flatwoods Envinronmental Park(pictured). Other exotic/invasive treatments include rosary pea pod picking. This can be labor intensive but long term beneficial as this reduces the regrowth due to see recruitment. Staff conducted a gopher tortoise survey at Tippecanoe Environmental Park in advance of planned habitat enhancement operations. Other routine maintenance operations include trimming vegetation from boardwalks at Oyster Creek Environmental Park.

We can’t forget to show this lovely group picture from Hooked on Books from 12/11; they had a great holiday gathering with lots of yummy treats. It’s the holidays so more food was on tap with Chef Warren presenting ‘The Secret is in the Sauce’. Several people were interested in our Law at the Library session about ‘Wills and Trusts’. We finished off the week with ‘Florida’s Bad Guys: The History of Piracy in Florida’ with local historian, Jacob Winge. Happy Holidays to all from the whole gang at the Englewood Charlotte Library!
