eth take heed lest he fall’’ (1 Cor. 10 : 12 ). The Revised Version implies that Ju das was a mere instrument in the hand of another (cf. 23-25). The real be trayer was Satan. This fact is indicated by the words: “Woe unto that man through whom the Son of man is be trayed!” (Matt. 26:24, R. V.). In exact fulfillment of prophecy, of the. Lord Jesus Christ it could be said: “The Son of man goeth as it. is written of him” (v. 24). Nevertheless the respon sibility of the man is never minimized. No man is forced to do Satan’s bid ding. Of him who does persist in re bellion against God, it must always be said sadly, “Good were it for that man if he had not been bom” (v. 24, R. V.), EH. T he N ew O rdinance (26-30) The fellowship hour commonly called "The Lord’s Supper” was distinct from the Passover. In its observance, the Supper could hardly be made simpler. The Lord knew, in the light of the posi tion His people would occupy on earth, that this memorial meal would have to be simple in all its parts; therefore He ordained that a morsel of bread and a sip of wine were all that would be needed to observe the new ordinance. It is not the outward elements but the inner meaning that gives power and blessing to the Lord’s Supper. _ - The universality of the observance of this Supper is seen in His words, “Drink ye all of it” (v. 27). All the disciples were to partake. It is a feast in which, so fa/- as his position before God is concerned, each believer in the Lord Jesus Christ is equal to all other believers. And it is not a Supper be longing to any particular group or church, but it is the Lord’s Supper to which all His disciples are invited and at which all of them are welcome. The occasion ended with our Lord’s utterance of the prophecy: “I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s king dom” (v. 29). The statement refers to the time when He will set up His king dom here on the earth. Looking for ward to that day, believers are taught by the Holy Spirit that they “eat this bread, and drink this cup . . . till he come” . (1 Cor. 11:26). In the power and blessing of the first Lord.’s Supper, believers went out singing—ready to meet an opposing world. Likewise to day will the Lord’s children be filled with joy as they contemplate “that blessed hops” (T it 2:13).

Mattbew 26:17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the dis ciples came to Jésus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? 18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him» The Mas« ter saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my dis ciples. 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover. 20 Now when the even was come, he sat down "with the twelve. 21 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that, one.of you shall be tray me. 22 And they were exceeding? sorrowful« and besran every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it If 28 And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. '24 The Son of man groeth as it is writ ten of h im :. but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man If he had hot been born. 25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said. 26 And as they were eating?, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and grave It to.the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27 And he took the Clip, and grave thanks, and grave it to them, sayingr, Drink ye all of it; 28 For this is my blood of the new testament which is shed for many for the. remission of sins. 29 But T say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new With you ia my Father’s kingdom. 90 And when they had sung: a hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. 1 LESSON TEXT: Matt. 26:17-30. T he L ast P assover (17-20) ECAUSE they were Jews, the dis ciples were accustomed to observe the Passover. As the day ap proached, they wondered where they would keep this feast. Like a family gathered around the head of the house, they consulted the Lord. Associated with' Him, their new and beloved Leader, they desired to keep this Passover. THE KING’ S BUSINESS 558 So. Hope St., Los Angeles, Cal. Following His direction, the disciples went to the appointed place and made ready. Thè Passover was a national feast of remembrance calling to the people’s minds the national origin and the re demption of Israel (cf. Ex. 12:26, 27). They had been bondsmen in Egypt, but with blood and by power, their God had delivered them. Hence it was as a re deemed people that the nation observed this feast. n . T he T raitor (21-25) The betrayal by Judas was no sur prise to the Lord (v. 21). His compas sion was even then striving to give to this man Judas another opportunity to cast off the influence of Satan and thus preserve himself from a fearful doom. But the greed of Judas proved too strong, and. Satan prevailed with him. When the Lord announced the pres ence of the traitor in the midst, the true humility of the other disciples is revealed in their asking, “Lord, is it I ? ” (v. 22 ). They were right in doubting their own strength of purpose and will, for no human being is invulnerable. .We shall do well to remember the Lord’s word, “Let him that thinketh he stand- BLACKBOARD LESSON
