Resilience, hard work, bravery and rigour are what come to mind when you think of Mam’ Nonkululeko Gobodo. A trailblazing figure in South Africa’s corporate landscape, Nonkululeko Gobodo, recently received an honorary doctorate UJ, cementing her legacy as a pioneer in the field of accountancy and leadership. Her journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of the most influential voices in South African business is a testament to her resilience, expertise, and commitment to excellence. Speaking about this milestone, Gobodo said she was humbled by the recognition.

“When you pursue your career and do your own thing, you never think that one day you will be recognised and be conferred with an honorary doctorate, but when it does happen it becomes a confirmation of your hard work and receiving it from the University of Johannesburg was truly heartwarming,” she said. Born and raised in Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape province during the tumultuous era of apartheid, Gobodo

defied the odds stacked against her. She pursued her education with determination, earning a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Transkei, now known as the Walter Sisulu University, in 1984 and later obtaining her Honours from the University of South Africa.

Her academic achievements laid a solid foundation for her career, which would soon catapult her into the forefront of the accounting profession in South Africa.
