Helping Kids One Snack at a Time

Our Work With the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy

Food is a universal language, and its most important word is “comfort.” Nothing improves my day as quickly as digging into my favorite home-cooked meal, and anyone who has ever gone straight to the pantry or fridge after a rough time at work knows how a favorite snack can offer a taste of contentment and well-being. At Kevin Patrick Law, we’re lucky enough to provide that moment of joy to kids who have gone through some of the toughest things a child can face — like physical and sexual abuse — by donating snack bags to the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy. It’s a difficult thing to talk about, but, sadly, child abuse is becoming more and more prevalent. Places like the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy are vital resources for kids who have suffered, and, after coming across abuse victims in our daycare cases, my firm aims to help them out any way we can. We feel donating snacks for kids to enjoy during their treatment, tough interviews, or just whenever they’re hungry, is a good way to show our support without intruding on their privacy.

and support to victims of

domestic minor sex trafficking.

It’s always a good feeling to drop off the bags, and a fun part of the process is shopping for the goodies that fill them. Zobia sent over a list of foods the girls might like, and I had a great time browsing the options on Amazon. It was exciting to fill my cart with the kind of snacks my parents wouldn’t necessarily have let me eat when I was a kid but always made me feel good after school. I loaded up on two kinds of Oreos, Chips Ahoy!, Capri Sun Pacific Coolers, and Frito-Lay Flamin’ Hot Mix. Hopefully, they loved it as much as I would have.

Just recently, I’ve realized the majority of the community groups Kevin Patrick Law partners with use food in some way to give back. It truly is a universal way of showing support. In addition to the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy, we work with Open Hand Atlanta, which delivers meals to the food-insecure; and Clyde’s Kitchen, which provides food for the homeless. I think it’s important to be involved in the community — particularly for lawyers, who often get a bad rap for not seeming to care. At Kevin Patrick Law, it's important to us to stay engaged and help others, and we plan to keep bringing people joy through food.

As a parent and fellow human being, I really appreciate the work the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy does, and, every time Director of Development Zobia Dat reaches out for help, I’m happy to rally my colleagues. We drop of snack bags at the center a few times a year and sometimes bring in doughnuts for the staff to enjoy during their training sessions or volunteer at special events like the Works of HeART art fundraiser. This summer, our administrator Grace, our new associate Baoyi, and I dropped off 50 snack bags for teenage girls participating

Meet Our New Summer Associate Welcome, Baoyi!

Enjoy the Weather While Keeping Your Pup Comfortable STAYING ‘COOL’ WITH YOUR CANINE

With all this late-summer sunshine, it’s the perfect time to take your dog out for some fun. And while spending time basking in nature’s beauty can be a great source of fun and exercise for you and your pets, it’s important to keep a careful watch on your dog’s core temperature to prevent heat exhaustion. There are several detectable signs of heat exhaustion that you can watch for, including abnormal lethargy, vomiting, or a brightly colored blue or red tongue. Here are some tips to keep your canine cool this summer. WATER IN ALL ITS FORMS While certain dog breeds thrive in hotter climates, all pups need a little extra care when it comes to staying hydrated during the summer. For starters, always make sure they have ready access to drinkable water. If you are going on an adventure, consider bringing a collapsible water bowl. If you are doing some backyard chilling, consider filling up a small wading pool with water for your pooch to splash or lounge in. SOME INVALUABLE INVENTIONS There are many contraptions to help you keep your canine cool in the summer heat. Booties to insulate their toes and protect their paw pads from the hot asphalt, cooling vests that reflect sunlight off darker fur, and pressure-activated cooling pads are just a few of the gizmos you can purchase to stave off those scorching temps. The Dog People, a website powered by Rover.com, also recommends making frozen “pupsicles,” a yogurt-based frozen treat that can satisfy doggy cravings while keeping them cool. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE While fun water toys and helpful cooling inventions are great, the best thing you can do to keep your dog cool is be careful about when you decide to go outside. Taking your pup out in the early morning or later in the evening, when the sun isn’t at its highest point in the sky, will help keep them cooler in the long run. Additionally, keep in mind that some breeds deal with the heat better than others. If you’re unsure, do a little research to determine your dog’s susceptibility to heat exhaustion. Just because the heat is sizzling doesn’t mean your dog should be! Keep these tips in mind before taking your canine out in the summer sun. They will thank you for it!

We are excited to welcome Baoyi Cai as a summer associate at Kevin Patrick Law. Baoyi is a rising 3L at Emory University Law School and earned her Bachelor of Laws degree in China before traveling to the U.S. as an international student. At Kevin Patrick Law, Baoyi does legal research, reviews documents, and drafts pleadings and demand letters for our Georgia personal injury cases. She works hard and is particularly interested in learning more about practicing in different legal fields, like automobile accidents and daycare injuries. As a summer associate, Baoyi also attended one of our personal injury mediations to learn about settlement strategies and negotiations. Before she joined us at Kevin Patrick Law, Baoyi was a diligent and engaged student at Emory. She is the founder and president of the Association of International Law Students and a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Coalition. Baoyi also won first place in the Duke Law Transactional Competition this March. During the contest, she and her teammates drafted an indemnification agreement for a stock purchase and negotiated the agreement with students from other law schools. Baoyi is also impressive beyond her work in the law. She speaks three languages — English, Mandarin, and Cantonese — and loves staying involved in our local community. When she isn’t at the office, you can find her volunteering for Project Open Hand, which delivers healthy meals to those in need in the Atlanta area. She also gives her time to the Emory Law Volunteer Clinic for Veterans and is an active member of the Georgia Asian Pacific American Bar Association. This year, she volunteered for its annual gala. We are happy to have Baoyi with us this summer as an associate at Kevin Patrick Law. She is a great asset to our personal injury practice and has a bright future ahead of her!

What’s Happening in Atlanta? Your Local Events Rundown

Almost half a million people live in Atlanta, and we love having all of that hustle and bustle in our backyard. Between the festivals, fundraisers, films, parties, and arts events, it’s possible to spend a lifetime in the city without ever getting bored. If you’re looking for something to do this month, don’t worry — Atlanta has you covered. In fact, there is so much going on that we’ve broken it down for you by category. Just don’t have all your fun in one place! ARTS AND CULTURE Art viewing is usually confined to the cool quiet of museums, but the Piedmont Park Arts Festival brings that beauty into the great outdoors each year. For 2019, the festival will cram 250 artists of all kinds into its namesake park on Aug. 17 and 18. At the same time, film buffs can check out these local offerings: the independent filmmaker-focused Atlanta Underground Film Festival, which runs Aug. 15–18 at the Synchronicity Theatre; and the BronzeLens Film Festival, which spotlights films made by people of color on Aug. 21 at the Hyatt Regency. FAMILY FUN If your family loves “Jurassic Park,” then the Fernbank Museum has the perfect time-traveling adventure for you. Grab the kids and head over on Aug. 17 to “stomp, chomp, and party like a

dinosaur” to celebrate the anniversary of Giants of the Mesozoic. Afterward, stop by the Center for Puppetry Arts for a performance of “Old MacDonald’s Farm” or a behind-the-scenes tour. FOOD, FOOD, FOOD Atlanta is always a feast for foodies, but the German Bierfest and Taste of Soul Atlanta are this month’s edible stars. The Bierfest, which will fill downtown Atlanta’s Woodruff Park on Aug. 24, is an authentic affair packed with bratwurst, pretzels, sauerkraut, schnitzel, and more than 35 types of German beer. Taste of Soul Atlanta, by contrast, dishes up regional cuisine from Aug. 31 through Sept. 2. Along with the Southern comfort food, attendees will enjoy live music, art, and activities for kids.

America’s Weirdest Airbnbs This Ain’t Motel 6!

When Airbnb was founded a little over a decade ago, the developers hoped to provide an alternative to traditional travel accommodations. Today, with annual revenue in the billions, the service is an industry unto itself. While most people use Airbnb to “live like a local” while traveling, you can find some truly wacky lodging options if you spend some time searching the platform. Here are just a few of the many contenders for the title of “Weirdest Airbnb in the U.S.” For ease of searching, the listings here have the same titles as they do on Airbnb. Earthships, houses run by clean energy and featuring reused materials, are a fixture of the Taos area. This one, which looks almost like a crashing wave with a living space in its undertow, combines the rustic charm of truly getting away from it all with modern amenities like Wi-Fi and in-home laundry. It’s a truly unique living space surrounded by pristine nature and not far from the historic Taos Pueblo. BRAND NEW STUDIO EARTHSHIP TAOS, NEW MEXICO

MANCAVE APARTMENT/AIRPLANE HANGAR GENEVA, FLORIDA

Airbnb super hosts Dan and Deborah have no shortage of quirky properties for rent — including yurts and treehouses — but their apartment fashioned out of an airplane hangar surely takes the cake. You’d be forgiven for thinking it was a theme restaurant featuring eclectic aviation. Memorabilia lines the walls with a bar front and center, and the bed is in a loft high above the ground.

DOG BARK PARK INN B&B COTTONWOOD, IDAHO

As you approach the Dog Bark Park Inn, you won’t have to guess if you’re in the right place. After all, how many buildings are shaped like beagles? When describing the space on Airbnb, the hosts make no bones about who this rental is aimed for. “Stay in a giant dog!” they say. In addition to being inside a massive wooden dog, you’ll find canine-themed games, books, and more. Talk about ruffing it.
