How does corn become Popcorn?
The volume test ______________________________________________________ Which type of corn has a higher volume: mushroom or butterfly? You’ll never guess the answer! 1 + 1 = 2? Not when it comes to corn and Popcorn. Popcorn is always tested in an MR-16 MWVT (Metric Weight Volume Tester). This device always measures with the exact same amount of corn (250 g).
______________________________________________________ When heated, the moisture inside the corn kernel expands until the hard shell can’t hold it in any longer and bursts. Within fractions of a second, the overheated starch expands under the pressure of the steam and creates a foam-like structure. It then imme- diately cools off and petrifies. Each piece of Popcorn is a tiny explosion frozen in time.
Different types of corn ______________________________________________________ You need popping corn to make Popcorn. This special type of corn comes in two varieties: Butterfly and mushroom. These both get their name from the shape of the kernels once they pop.
