NOW I HELP PEOPLE OVERCOME THAT FEAR EVERY DAY I Used to Be Terrified of the Dentist

Hi there! I’m Jamie, one of the dental hygienists here at Newman Springs Dental Care. If you’re a little nervous about visiting the dentist, well, you and I already have something in common! You see, I didn’t exactly grow up dreaming about dental chairs and fluoride trays — it was actually the opposite. As a kid, I was terrified of the dentist. My pediatric dentist still tells my little sister I was her worst patient ever. But maybe that’s why I’m here now. I’ve been in your shoes, and I get it. I understand that fear, and now I use that empathy daily to help my patients feel calm, heard, and cared for. Before becoming a hygienist, I spent seven years as a dental assistant on Staten Island. I was always interested in health care and making people feel better, and after a while, I realized I wanted to take that next step in my career. So, I hit the books, went back to school, and became a dental hygienist three years ago. I recently celebrated my first anniversary since joining Newman Springs Dental Care, and I have to say it’s been an incredible ride so far. Dr. Menon and the whole team welcomed me like family from day one. And I don’t mean that lightly. This place has such a warm, tight-knit vibe. Everyone truly has each other’s backs, and you can feel that the moment you walk through the door. We laugh a lot, support each other, and celebrate wins big and small, just like family does. What I love most about being a hygienist is knowing I can make a difference in someone’s overall health and confidence. Oral health is such a massive part of our well-being, and it feels good to be part of that journey for our patients. Plus, I’ve built so many wonderful relationships with people who come into our office. If I had a dollar for every time a patient forgot my name but remembered my Staten Island accent, I’d be rich by now. But hey, I’ll take it! Outside the office, life is pretty full and fun. I grew up with two sisters and am now a proud aunt to my amazing 10-year-old niece, who is basically a mini version of me. Sundays are essential in my family: It’s our big family day, which means lots of food, laughs, and good times.

I’m also a huge fan of staying active. In high school, I ran track — indoor, outdoor, cross-country, you name it. These days, I’ve swapped sprinting for long walks and the occasional race. Last summer, I participated in the Brooklyn Half Marathon, which was every bit as exhausting and exhilarating as it sounds. Gardening is another love, especially growing vegetables. There’s something so calming about digging in the dirt and watching something

grow. But nothing beats coming home to my dog, Cali. She’s a 3-year-old pit-Lab mix, about 40 pounds of pure joy, and she’s my whole world. I got her when she was 6 months old, and she’s been my shadow ever since. So, that’s me in a nutshell! Whether you’re due for a cleaning, need some encouragement in the chair, or just want to chat about dogs, veggies, or weekend family fun, I’m here for you. I can’t wait to meet you or see you again! Just listen for the accent — you’ll know it’s me!

Anxious About the Dentist? Sedation Can Make All the Difference

Have you ever canceled an appointment at the last minute because the thought alone made your heart race? Maybe you’ve spent a restless night tossing and turning, worrying about what your dentist might say, or worse, what they might do. If this sounds like you, you’re not alone. Dental anxiety affects millions, and thankfully, we have a compassionate solution: sedation dentistry. At Newman Springs Dental Care, we believe going to the dentist shouldn’t feel like a chore or a challenge. It should feel safe, calming, and even, dare we say, pleasant. That’s why we offer a range of sedation options to help take the edge off so you can receive the care you need without the stress you don’t. Say Goodbye to Dental Anxiety Sedation dentistry isn’t just about helping you “get through” a procedure; it’s about transforming your entire experience. Whether you’re in for a routine cleaning or a complex treatment like full-mouth reconstruction, sedation can: • Keep you comfortable for extended procedures • Control an overactive gag reflex • Reduce your awareness and memory of the procedure • Speed up treatment time by helping you stay relaxed and still

moment you arrive, we focus on your comfort. A friendly hello, a warm blanket, and a calm atmosphere all help set the tone. And if you need a little extra support, we have three sedation options to choose from. 3 Ways to Stay Comfortable Inhaled Sedation (Laughing Gas): This gentle option takes the edge off in minutes. You’ll feel calm, maybe even giggly, and best of all, it wears off quickly so you can drive yourself home. Oral Conscious Sedation: You’ll take a prescribed pill before your appointment and arrive feeling relaxed. This option is perfect for those who need a deeper level of calm.

IV Sedation: For those undergoing more intensive procedures, IV sedation provides a near-sleep experience. You remain responsive but blissfully unaware of the treatment. You don’t need to “tough it out” anymore. Dental care can be calm, stress-free, and completely manageable with the right team and tools!

Our team is specially trained to deliver sedation safely and with care. From the

The Secret to a Cozier Home ADD COMFORT WITHOUT SPENDING MUCH

This time of year, we’re all looking for ways to make our homes cozier. Colder weather and fewer hours of sunlight have many of us inside more and craving indoor comforts. Coziness isn’t about square footage or designer furniture. It’s about creating a space that’s easy to live in and somewhere you want to be. And while Pinterest boards are full of staged rooms and expensive upgrades, you can make your home feel warmer without spending that much. Start by thinking in layers. No matter how nice the furniture is, a bare room will feel cold. But drape a blanket or two over the couch, toss a couple of textured pillows on the chair, and add a shaggy rug

underfoot, and suddenly everything feels softer and more inviting. Texture is a shortcut to comfort, and bringing more of it into your space doesn’t cost much. Lighting matters, too. Overhead lights often feel harsh, especially in the evening. Try switching to a floor lamp with a soft bulb or stringing fairy lights above a reading chair. When you’re trying to make things more cozy, it’s more about glow than brightness. Indirect lighting, candles, and a shaded lamp or two can change the entire mood of a room. Scent is another layer people often overlook. Remember, coziness is as much — if not more — about what you feel as it is about what you see. A familiar scent can settle the body and mind, whether a stovetop simmer pot, an oil diffuser, or a favorite candle. It also helps to make space for the things you enjoy. If you love to read, set out a book you’ve been meaning to finish and keep a blanket nearby. If you journal or sketch, leave your notebook where it’s easy to grab. And don’t forget the other little touches, like your favorite slippers or a comfy sweater. Ultimately, coziness goes beyond a style trend. It’s a way of being more comfortable at home and doesn’t have to be complicated. Simply start with what you have and build from there.

SUDOKU

Life gets busy. Between work, school runs, and everything in between, it’s easy to let something like a routine dental checkup fall off your radar. But here’s the thing: Skipping that appointment can have more serious consequences than you might think. After all, dental checkups help protect your whole-body health. Small Problems Become Big (and Expensive) Ones One of the biggest risks of missing your checkup is that minor issues can go undetected and untreated until they become major problems. A little cavity we could have filled easily might grow into something needing a crown or even a root canal. Gum inflammation ignored for too long can progress to periodontal disease, which can lead to tooth loss. And the longer these issues go unaddressed, the more expensive the treatment becomes. You Miss Out on Early Detection Dental professionals are trained to identify signs of infections, oral cancer, and other serious health issues. Regular checkups allow us to catch early signs of trouble you might not see or feel on your own. When we catch problems early, treatment is often easier and more effective. Plaque and Tartar Don’t Take a Break Even if you brush and floss daily (kudos to you!), it’s nearly impossible to clean every surface of your mouth perfectly. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar, which can only be removed professionally. If left alone, tartar buildup can lead to gum disease and contribute to bad breath. Think of your dental checkup as your six-month wellness check for your mouth. It’s a chance to prevent problems before they start, save money in the long run, and keep your smile looking and feeling great. Your Teeth Won’t Wait WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SKIP THE DENTIST

Reel in More Fish This Autumn

Autumn Angling Where, When, and How to Hook Fish This Fall

TARGET SHALLOW WATERS As temperatures drop, baitfish like shad move into the backs of creeks and embayments. Predatory fish such as bass and crappie follow, making these areas hotspots. Focus your efforts on these shallow zones to increase your catch rate. EXPERIMENT WITH DEPTHS Fall turnover can scatter fish throughout various depths. Don’t hesitate to try different depths until you locate active fish. Using a fish finder can help you identify these productive zones. FISH THROUGHOUT THE DAY Unlike summer, when fish are most active during dawn and dusk, fall fish feed more consistently throughout the day. This allows for flexible fishing schedules without the need for early starts. FOCUS ON STRUCTURE Fish gravitate toward structures like submerged wood and rocky banks during fall. These areas

provide shelter and warmth, and targeting them can lead to successful catches.

MATCH THE CATCH In fall, baitfish grow larger. Adjust your lure size and color to mimic the prevalent forage in your fishing area. This increases the likelihood of enticing bites. EXPLORE STOCKED WATERS Many lakes and streams are stocked with trout and catfish in the fall. These fish are often eager to bite, providing excellent opportunities for anglers. UTILIZE LIVE BAIT Live bait can be particularly effective in cooler temperatures. Minnows, nightcrawlers, and shad can more effectively entice sluggish fish than artificial lures. MONITOR WATER CONDITIONS Fall often brings changes in water levels due to drawdowns. Stay informed about these conditions, as they influence fish locations and behavior.

As cooler temperatures, golden leaves, and holidays roll in, fall is one of the best-kept secrets in fishing. While many pack up their rods after summer, savvy anglers know autumn is when the real magic happens. Fish feed aggressively as they prepare for winter, and the crowds of people enjoying the water have thinned out. A few seasonal tweaks can level up your fishing game this season, whether you’re chasing bass, crappie, or trout.
