Giving brings its own rewards
T he most surprising part about service is that while you are doing something voluntarily for others, you gain a huge amount yourself. This irony is unknown to some boys when they first undertake Christ’s College service projects. However, it does not take long for them to learn about the wonderful shared benefits that follow.
Every boy at College learns about the concept of giving, whether of time, treasure or talent, Assistant Principal – Community Engagement and Special Projects Neil Porter says. “It’s the time aspect that we focus on, and in the Year 10 Service Week, in groups of 10 to 12, the boys do a variety of service work alongside specialist agencies – including the Banks Peninsula
Conservation Trust, the City Mission, various community gardens, and the regional and City Council rangers. “It teaches them service is a positive thing to do, with benefits for them, too.” Additionally, more service is completed through the individual annual projects of College’s 10 Houses, and the school’s Service Committee.
