Climate for turning the tide

L ong before sustainability was a popular component in every workplace and household, Christ’s College was an advocate. It began in earnest in the early 2000s. Dr Graeme Swanson, Head of Teaching & Learning – Science and PE, HOD Biology recalls establishing an active Environmental Committee in 2005 soon after his arrival. That commitment has developed to the stage that sustainability is now embedded, with a sustainability strand – or theme – in the new Christ’s College Diploma. As “sustainability” has become a common term and concept, more staff are working to educate a generation of College students about it – especially global warming, Graeme says. “While as teachers we can educate students about the issues, the expense of recycling bins or solar panels – and other base-level initiatives – has to be funded,” he says. Graeme remembers the early efforts by Christ’s College on sustainability matters. “We worked on a number of projects, including monitoring power use across the school,
