College – Issue 42

As well as producing digital images, Bill specialises in large archival prints – “it’s fun to see 25 of my images printed up to 1.5m wide hanging in one building”. His love of nature, ability to communicate with anyone and observe what others may not see have all contributed to his success. “There is something meditative about just observing an environment closely, watching the subtle changes, then picking a moment where all seems in order and capturing the image,” he explains.

“My most satisfying time is spent one-on-one, photographing an individual – such as artist Austen Deans – and, in the process, learning a little about their story.” His favourite photos are the ones that persist – evoking a strong emotion about a person or place. Bill nabbed his favourite photo of his father, Bob, when still a teenager. “There is nothing fancy about the composition – just Dad standing on the lawn with his arms crossed – but it transports me right back there.”
