Stress Busters: How To Reduce Burnout In The Workplace BY PHILLIP M. PERRY Jason has always been a stand-out employee. Lately, though, he’s shifted into overdrive. He arrives before the crack of dawn, stays until 7:00 PM, and gets his projects done three weeks before they’re due. Every manager’s dream? Maybe. But there’s another possibility: Jason is overcompensating for chronic stress that will eventually lead to a mental breakdown and his departure from the company.

Lawsuit Accuses C'board Producers Of Price Fixing According to Packaging Dive and other me- dia reports, containerboard producers are being hit with a class-action antitrust lawsuit accusing them of creating a “cartel” and en- gaging in price collusion to boost profits at the expense of customers, as first reported by Bloomberg Law . On Tuesday, July 29 Artuso Pastry Foods Corp. filed the complaint in federal court in Illinois against entities including Cascades, Georgia-Pacific, Graphic Packaging Interna- tional, Greif, International Paper, Packaging Corporation of America, Pratt Industries and SmurfitWestrock over a series of seven price increases from November 2020 until now. Artuso Pastry is requesting that plaintiffs receive treble damages, an amount three times the damages eventually awarded by the court. It also seeks injunctive relief, in which a court orders violating parties to stop taking a particular action, and attorneys’ fees. Major containerboard producers have faced a price collusion class action lawsuits before. In one example, Minnesota-based cleaning products company Kleen Products in 2010 brought a suit against several container-

Stories of employee breakdowns are increasingly common in to- day’s workplace. Some 66 percent of American employees are expe- riencing burnout, a common result of stress, according to a new study from Moodle, an online learning technology company. Younger work- ers seem to be suffering more: Over 81 percent of survey respondents between 18 and 34 years of age are reporting burnout, much higher than the 49 percent over 55. Creating Stress What’s fueling the problem? “Of the many causes of stress in today's workplace, the one leading the way is economic uncertainty,” said Ran- dy Goruk, president of The Randall Wade Group, Scottsdale, AZ. “Ev- erybody's concerned that a general business downturn might lead to staff reductions. On top of that we have the technology factor: People are afraid AI will replace their positions.” Such fears are only magnified by incursions of business activity into the domestic sphere. “Recently there has been less of a distinction be- CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

for more than 85 years. It says in the last five years, defen- dants engaged in “numerous unprecedented and unjusti- fied price increases, often implemented at the exact same time and for the exact same increase.” This “conspiracy” resulted in customers paying higher prices for container- board than would have existed in a competitive market, according to the filing. This lawsuit stems from Mount Vernon, New York- based Artuso Pastry purchasing containerboard products from WestRock, now Smurfit Westrock, and paying “an arti- ficially high price,” according to the complaint. The plaintiff claims that containerboard prices were relatively stable throughout the 2010s, but have jumped dramatically over the last five years — 33 percent from November 2020 to September 2022. The lawsuit alleges that no changes occurred to economic conditions such as input costs or demand “that could plausibly account for the magnitude of the price increases” that the producers implemented. Reasons that producers have cited for the hikes include increased input costs for raw materials, transportation, en- ergy and labor. Some industry observers have questioned the timing of containerboard price hikes during the last two years, citing weak demand and a global oversupply. Part of the problem is the amount of industry consol- idation that has occurred over the last few decades, the lawsuit says, citing that just a handful of companies now control the vast majority of market share, 85 percent, for containerboard products.

board producers, also in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, on accusations of con- spiring to increase prices and reduce output from 2004 to 2010. That case resulted in multiple containerboard companies, including Packaging Corporation of America and International Paper, settling via multimillion-dollar pay- ments, although Georgia-Pacific and WestRock went to court. Many of the defendants in the Kleen Products case are also named in the new lawsuit. In the current nearly 50-page filing, Artuso Pastry said current containerboard producers and their predecessors have engaged in anticompetitive behavior and price fixing

G-P Announces Retirement Of CEO And President, Christian Fischer Atlanta, Georgia based Georgia-Pacific has announced the retirement of Christian Fischer, who has served as president and CEO since 2017. Fischer will retire from the company at the end of October, ending a tenure dating back to 1989. Beginning in August, he will transition his responsibilities to Mark Luetters, who is currently an exec- utive vice president at Koch. Georgia-Pacific has been a subsidiary of Koch for the past 20 years. Luetters has overseen Georgia-Pacific during that period, and spent nearly a decade as president of GP Building Products. Luetters will serve as an interim replacement. Georgia-Pacific expects to name a more per- manent leader next year. “I look forward to working collaboratively with the GP team on our key initiatives, and ultimately naming a new, long-term GP president and CEO at some point within cal- endar year 2026,” Luetters said in a news release. Georgia-Pacific, one of the largest producers of con- tainerboard and corrugated packaging, announced in May that it would permanently close a containerboard mill in Cedar Springs, Georgia, resulting in 535 planned layoffs, most to take place by August 1. The company indicated production may move to containerboard mills in Alabama, Mississippi, Oregon and Virginia.

Colbert Packaging To Participate In Startup Moxie Program For High School Students Elkhart, Indiana based Colbert Packaging, one of the Midwest's leading independently-owned paperboard packaging manufacturers, has an- nounced its participation in Startup Moxie, an entrepreneurship-focused dual credit course connecting high school juniors and seniors from across Elkhart County for daily immersive experiences. Sixteen students toured Colbert’s Elkhart facility and engaged in discussions with Colbert management about its business and manufacturing operations.

• Only standard hand tools are required for all maintenance • Direct drive with no chains or sprockets • No tools for media change required » just zip it up » media change out in minutes • Filter is accessible for visual inspection during operation, Significant Advantages Over Conventional Dust Filtration Technology

The educational program provides students with hands-on experi- ences that include touring local businesses, networking with business owners and leaders, and applying entrepreneurial principles to develop their own startup ventures. Through the program, students learn how to develop a business plan for their envisioned business projects. At the end of the school year, students pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges in hopes of receiving real startup funding to help bring their visions to life. After being introduced to the Startup Moxie team at a community event in 2024, Colbert HR Manager Todd Douthit recognized the value of the program and got Colbert involved. “This is a great way for high school students to get the opportunity to meet with local business lead- ers and learn how businesses operate, what they produce, how they were built and how they experience growth,” states Douthit. “The stu- dents asked great questions and provided excellent feedback during their visit to our facility.” Startup Moxie program representative Kris Weimer said, “The stu- dents had an eye-opening experience touring Colbert Packaging and meeting members of the leadership team in Elkhart. They were especial- ly inspired about Colbert’s journey in becoming a certified woman-owned business, as well as the company’s work with well-known major brands in the health and beauty and pharmaceutical markets.” Weimer goes on to say, “The students were fascinated by the behind-the-scenes look at the manufacturing process used to create high-quality packaging prod- ucts. "The Supplier Deliveries Index indicated faster delivery performance after seven consecutive months in expan- sion territory. The reading of 49.3 percent is down 4.9 per- centage points from the 54.2 percent recorded in June. (Supplier Deliveries is the only ISM® Report On Business® index that is inversed; a reading of above 50 percent in- dicates slower deliveries, which is typical as the economy improves and customer demand increases.) The Invento- ries Index registered 48.9 percent, down 0.3 percentage point compared to June's reading of 49.2 percent. "In July, U.S. manufacturing activity contracted at a fast- er rate, with declines in the Supplier Deliveries and Em- ployment Indexes contributing as the biggest factors in the 1-percentage point loss of the Manufacturing PMI®. "The demand indicators improved, with the New Orders and Backlog of Orders indexes contracting at slower rates, while the Customers' Inventories and New Export Orders

traction in April 2020. (A Manufacturing PMI above 42.3 percent generally indicates an expansion of the overall economy.) The New Orders Index contracted for the sixth month in a row following a three-month period of expan- sion; the figure of 47.1 percent is 0.7 percentage point high- er than the 46.4 percent recorded in June. The July read- ing of the Production Index (51.4 percent) is 1.1 percentage points higher than June's figure of 50.3 percent. The Prices Index remained in expansion territory, reg- istering 64.8 percent, down 4.9 percentage points com- pared to the reading of 69.7 percent reported in June. The Backlog of Orders Index registered 46.8 percent, up 2.5 percentage points compared to the 44.3 percent in June. The Employment Index registered 43.4 percent, down 1.6 percentage points from June's figure of 45 percent.

indexes contracted at slightly faster rates. A 'too low' status for the Customers' Inven- tories Index is usually considered positive for future production. "Regarding output, the Production In- dex increased month over month to move further into expansion territory, however; the Employment Index dropped further into contraction as panelists indicated that managing head count is still the norm at their companies, as opposed to hiring. The mixed indicators in output suggest compa- nies still being cautious in their hiring even with an increase in production. "Finally, inputs (defined as supplier de- liveries, inventories, prices and imports), on net, declined further into contraction territory. The Inventories Index moved marginally further into contraction territo- ry after expanding in April, as companies work to reduce or adjust inventory to bet- ter align with demand. "Looking at the manufacturing econ- omy, 79 percent of the sector's gross do- mestic product (GDP) contracted in July, up from 46 percent in June. Notably, 31 percent of GDP is strongly contracting (registering a composite PMI® of 45 per- cent or lower), up from 25 percent in June. The share of sector GDP with a PMI® at or below 45 percent is a good metric to gauge overall manufacturing weakness. Of the six largest manufacturing industries, none expanded in July, compared to four in June," says Spence. Among the 10 industries reporting con- traction in July are: Printing & Related Sup- port Activities; Paper Products; Chemical Products; Machinery; Wood Products; and Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products.

Superior Lithographics Leverages Quality Of Koenig & Bauer Presses As one of the leading award-winning, large-format pa- perboard packaging printers in the U.S. catering to well- known brands, Vernon, California based Superior Litho- graphics counts quality as the most important attribute for its customers and is one of the firm’s six core values, which also include safety, respect, communication, teamwork, and creativity. “It may seem cliché, but quality is definitely ranked highest to our customers,” says Jared Rounsevell, Director of Operational Excellence (OpEx) at Superior Lithograph- ics. “This can be anything from print quality to functional quality or how well our products are running on our cus- tomers’ equipment.” The Southern California printer, which produces fold- ing cartons, sleeves/wraps, corrugated top sheet and litho labels, measures quality several ways, including manu- al visual inspection, camera/automated inspection, and physical tests. Improvements in technology have made inspection easier, says Rounsevell, especially on its newer Koenig & Bauer printing presses that are equipped with automated systems that control color and analyze every sheet to ensure 100 percent quality. “Our two newest Koenig & Bauer printing presses are equipped with inline QualiTronic and PrintCheck, an image

inspection system, and offline ErgoTronic quality control systems, which is designed to optimize print quality and increase total job throughput,” says Rounsevell. “These systems, along with the Sensoric Infeed System, have led to great results on those presses. They allow our opera- tors to run at high speeds while still maintaining consistent color and register throughout the run.” While automation and new technology remain critical to Superior Lithographics’ quality aspirations, its employ- ees are equally as important. Superior emphasizes the Toyota Way principle that “quality is everyone’s respon- sibility,” regularly training employees on standardized processes and procedures to produce the best chance of a high-quality outcome. Team members meet regularly to review potential process improvement initiatives with each department focusing on streamlining processes and exceeding customer expectations. “We continuously work to build quality into the process- es, starting from our product specifications and design, all the way through manufacturing and shipping,” says Roun- sevell. “Much of this process design relies on experienced people along with integrated quality control systems work- ing together to have the highest level of sustainability and repeatable results. We always want to give our team the best tools available to aid in their production and quality results, both making their jobs easier and producing the highest quality outcomes for our customers.” Visit www.koenig-bauer.com for more information.

P+PB Releases Positive Findings On Value Of Advertising Campaign Every five years, federal checkoff programs like the Paper and Packaging Board (P+PB) undergo an independent re- turn-on-investment evaluation. It’s a requirement ground- ed in the Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act and reviewed by USDA economists to ensure that the pro- gram is delivering value to the industries that fund them. Overall, the P+PB consumer education campaign in- creased or protected the consumption of four of the five paper grades in the program by a total of 1.2 million tons per year or 2 percent, from 2019 to 2023. The report ana- lyzed annual data gathered from government and industry sources, representing five grades of paper manufactured (bond paper, printing and writing paper, kraft paper, paper- board and containerboard)—that fund the program. The study was conducted by Dr. Harry Kaiser—a Gellert Family Professor of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University and internationally renowned expert in the economics of generic advertising and promotion programs. Dr. Kaiser applied a USDA-accepted econo- metric model that controlled for outside factors like GDP, pricing and historical category trends, ensuring that the impact isolated was attributable to the P+PB campaign. The findings speak clearly: • The campaign had a positive and statistically significant impact on consumption of four of five paper grades, with the exception of bond paper • Over the past five years, the industry spent $114.3 mil- lion on the P+PB campaign resulting in a new ROI of $13.96. That is, every dollar invested in the P+PB cam- paign returned $13.96 in profit for manufacturers and importers. Dr. Kaiser has reviewed a lot of checkoff programs and is quite confident the ROI is there even as tons decline and costs increase. “The direct effects of this program to the industry are significant and the industry is better off as a result of P+PB’s program. These are not assumptions—they are validated out- comes backed by industry and government data. And as we head into the renewal vote from July 14–25, these re- sults matter. This program isn’t just a marketing campaign—it’s a strategic industry tool, delivering proven ROI, protecting demand, and elevating paper and paper packaging in a challenging and competitive materials marketplace. If you haven’t yet reviewed the full report or the topline findings, I encourage you to do so. The data confirms the ROI of the campaign and the multi-sector investment confirms what we can accomplish at scale working across the forest products sector. The Paper and Packaging Board creates preference for paper and paper-based packaging by reinforcing why paper is an everyday, earth-friendly choice that allows consumers to feel good about their purchase decisions.

tween home and work, a trend that started during Covid when many people started operating remotely,” said Britta- ny L . Truszkowski, Chief Operating Officer, Grand Canyon Law Group. “At the same time, managers are demanding more productivity than ever before and expecting workers to be constantly available.” Too, domestic life itself has become more complicat- ed. “Workers are facing more challenges at home,” said Joe Mull, a workplace engagement consultant. “Some are economic, while others are related to an increase in men- tal health issues. And more people are acting as caregiv- ers for family members.” Pressures can mount when peo- ple lack the opportunity to de-stress after work. Spotting Stress Not all stress is bad. Some anxiety is a normal and even productive reaction to workplace challenges. “Healthy stress is a natural response to a new project and can ac- tually motivate people to get things done,” said Samantha Edu, a workplace wellness consultant. “Stress starts to get problematic, though, when it damages peoples’ ability to perform at their peak.”

How to tell the difference? Bad stress often causes a change in behavior. In the opening story, Jason’s perfor- mance shot through the roof. But performance can also plummet. “Stressed individuals may start missing dead- lines,” said Max Friar, partner of Calder Capital. “They may exhibit less creative problem-solving or become easily irri- tated and forgetful. The quality of their work may drop, or they may start arriving late or calling in sick.” Often, stressed individuals exhibit emotional detach- ment: This can manifest as a retreat into silence, a with- drawal from team interactions, or lack of interest in out- comes for which they once took pride. Finally, one system-wide condition is a real red flag: High employee churn. “Organizations that have high chronic turnover, especially if employees jump ship for competing businesses, are often suffering from workplace stress,” said Mull. Reducing Stress The good news is that companies can take steps to spot and reduce workplace stress. Doing so can bolster profitability. “People who are less stressed are more en- gaged with their work, incur less absenteeism, and exhibit greater productivity,” said Susan Snipes, head of Remote People, a recruitment firm. “All of that contributes to the bottom line.” Techniques for stress reduction tend to revolve around one central idea: Employees become happier and more productive when they are treated as people rather than as cogs in a machine. “Managers can go a long way toward reducing stress by introducing more humane practices in the workplace and minimizing the degree to which jobs impact individuals’ domestic lives,” said Mull. Here are some effective techniques: • Listen better : Humanizing the workplace starts with listening. “Go talk with your people and listen to what they say,” said Goruk. “Come up with a couple of great questions you can ask that result in feedback about their greatest concerns. This can help get to the bot- tom of what’s creating stress.” Here are a few questions that can elicit useful feed- back: What can we do to make your job easier? How can the work environment be changed to make our business more productive? Is there any part of your job that seems unnecessary or requires more time than it’s worth? Bonus tip : Some managers maintain open-door poli- cies, making themselves available at specific times when employees can air their feelings in a private setting. • Build trusting relationships : Managers who build trust- ing relationships with team leaders will be better able to spot signs of stress. They may discover that some people are engaging in too much or too little social in- teraction, or they may perceive a negative personality conflict among team members. Managers and supervisors should tell staff members that it’s okay to talk about what is bothering them. Other- wise, they may fear opening up. “People may sense it is inappropriate to talk about emotions at work,” said Snipes. “They may think they will be perceived as weak if they admit they’re stressed.” Trust can also be built with proactive and transparent communication. “Suppose a rumor about a pending com- pany merger or departmental change is causing everyone to be stressed out,” said Goruk. “Proactive and detailed messaging can dispel fear and ensure everyone knows where they stand.” Bonus tip : Gaps in communication can result when team members differ by age, experience, education or lan- guage. These gaps can cause stress because people are not sure they are communicating effectively. • Set clear work guidelines : “Ambiguity when it comes to job expectations can create stress,” said Snipes.
