Fifty Shades of Grey [ F O R EWO R D ]

You. Are. Mine...

The three words that took our collective breath away were spoken by Christian Grey, the charismatic character that intrigued and seduced not just Anastasia Steele, but readers all over the world. Christian’s possessive and insatiable passion for smart, yet inexperienced Ana in the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy soared into our social consciousness and set the publishing industry on fire.  The trilogy of Fifty Shades of Grey , created and authored by E.L. James, is recognized and lauded as a global cultural phenomenon. The books have been published in fifty-two countries, and to date over 125 million books

have been sold. The bestseller literally saved jobs in paper mills about to close because of the insatiable demand for the printed books. Bringing in over $570 million at the box office, the film version of the first book was a worldwide hit and the following two films are anticipated to echo that success. The trailer for Fifty Shades Darker premiered in September 2016 and, with over 114 million views, broke the record for the most views in the first 24 hours 1 . So what kind of woman boldly changes the face of publishing and the market for female fan-driven films? It takes a

rebel with a powerful creative vision, a writer with a complex understanding of the sexual psyche of women, a gift for captivating storytelling, and a social media aficionado who developed a personal connection with her readers creating a powerhouse of devoted fans. But for me, beyond the world-record- setting statistics, Erika (the “E” in E.L.) has been a dear friend of mine since the days when she was still writing the original draft of what would become Fifty Shades of Grey . It’s been exciting to see her conquer the worlds of publishing and film, but what I love best is that she’s still the warm, down-to-earth woman and

caring friend that she always was. Erika and I share a love for romance, music, art and design. We’ve attended concerts, museums and gallery shows together, and I’ve always been impressed with her naturally sophisticated visual sense. She collects classic and contemporary photography, and also takes stunning photographs herself, which she shares with her followers on social media. She’s always had a clear vision in her mind of the characters and settings of her books. Those visuals, which informed not just the book covers and promotional imagery design, but have

also been key to the sophisticated and sexy art direction for the movies.

lovers with feelings perhaps unexplored. This collaboration has been a long time in the making, but well worth the wait. When I gaze at Raphael’s Fifty Shades of Grey inspired images, I swoon and am swept away to a world of beauty, passion and devotion. Art that evokes such feelings deserves to be coveted. Is it any wonder that it stirs up the intense desire to possess the art? …to Make. It. Mine.

It’s that vision that made this development of Fifty Shades of Grey limited edition fine art with the amazing artist Raphael Mazzucco, in collaboration with Washington Green, something we’ve both been tremendously excited about. With Raphael, Erika found a kindred spirit…a passionate and expressive artist who can capture the desires of a woman within the four edges of a picture frame. Raphael’s images, created through his and Erika’s mutual inspiration, are visual poetry that will undoubtedly seduce art

I trust you will be inspired to surrender to that feeling too.

The delicately seductive appeal of this collection draws upon the hedonistic narrative of E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy to produce images as delicate as they are striking. Beautifully presented in a monochromatic mixed media composition, they represent the creative meeting of minds between Raphael Mazzucco and E.L.James.

Each edition is approved and hand signed by both Raphael Mazzucco and E.L. James and comes complete with its own certificate of authenticity. The signing took place in London on Thursday 8 September 2016, in the presence of Glyn Washington. Mr Washington was quoted as saying “We are thrilled to be able to offer such a great collection of iconic images in 2016 - the first Fifty Shades of Grey fine art collection”...

E.L. James was born Erika Mitchell in 1963 in London, England. Her father worked as a BBC cameraman and the family lived in Buckinghamshire in South East England. After graduating from the University of Kent, where she studied history, she embarked on a career in television, rising to the level of Head of Production. In 1987 James married screenwriter and director Niall Leonard. Inspired by Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight vampire fiction series, James began her career as a novelist writing fan fiction in 2009. Set in Seattle, her Master of the Universe series appeared online in instalments and featured scenes of sadomasochism, sexual submission and bondage. This episodic drama was eventually published as the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. Originally produced as e-books and limited-run paperbacks, James’ books attracted a remarkable degree of popularity, thanks entirely to word- of-mouth and online book blogs. The trilogy went viral and soon caught the attention of the mainstream media. By mid-2012, sales figures were reported to have outstripped the previous UK record holder, the Harry Potter series, and the trilogy topped the bestseller chart in the USA for a record twenty weeks. Universal Pictures and Focus Features secured the rights to the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy the same year, and the first film was released in 2015. Fifty Shades Darke r, the second film in the trilogy, opens in February 2017.

Raphael Mazzucco is one of the world’s most influential and talented fashion photographers and contemporary artists, critically acclaimed for his singular eye and his captivating aesthetic. After years spent honing his craft in Italy, France and Amsterdam, his arrival in New York City garnered attention from some of fashion’s elite, creating iconic imagery for the likes of Victoria’s Secret, Guess Jeans, L’Oreal, Ralph Lauren and Bergdorf Goodman. His imagery has appeared in L’Official, French and Italian Vogue, L’Uomo Vogue, Marie Claire, Playboy, and Vanity Fair, featuring not only his editorial fashion imagery but celebrity portraiture of notable actors including Benicio Del Toro, Matt Damon, Susan Sarandon, and Elizabeth Banks. His artistic visual narrative captures the human form set against a backdrop of startling landscapes spanning the continents, from Icelandic glaciers to African wildlife, the outback of Western Australia to Vietnamese rice paddies. He incorporates these documentary forms into building a layered narrative through paint, collage, and hand- lettered texts. The artwork reflects a palimpsest approach of articulation

through reinvention. Through these works, we journey alongside Raphael through terrains both geographic and emotional, artistic expressions that evidence his imprimatur on our culture as a whole. A two-year tour of exhibitions that travelled the globe, presenting his work to Milan, Florence, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Singapore, Los Angeles, Art Basel in Miami, and New York City was met with critical praise. Following the tour, Raphael immediately launched into an artwork and photo essay book collaboration with music impresario, Jimmy Iovine and rap producer, Sean “Diddy” Combs. Interview Magazine joined with Carolyn Murphy in summer 2013 to host an exhibition of his work at his Montauk, Long Island home, adding to recent profiles of him in the Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, and The New York Times Style Section. Paris Vogue has also featured Raphael several times, commenting that his style “oozes sensuality and charm” Raphael’s work is being featured in a month-long exhibition in London’s esteemed Castle Fine Art, Mayfair. A native of Vancouver, Canada, Raphael lives in Montauk, with his wife, Lisa, and his son, Sascha.
