read a Jewish book. In all the essential character o f all his passions as well as o f his actions, he 'remains a Jew . . . Nor do I forget those thousands o f liberals who would wel come Jewish assimilation. The nation as a whole, while demanding assimilation, resists it . . . N o assimilation is possible.” “ The International Jew?” “ There ain’t no such ani mal!” The only Jew there is, is a Jewish Jew, the world’s most rabid nationalist ! When any Jew claims otherw ise- watch him! He’s fooling you! Though he may desire it, yet, a Socialist, spurning his racial inheritances, he cannot be ! A bigwig or a littlewig—his name is Rosenblatt. He cannot ignore it, and the Gentiles do not Ignore it ! The earthly kingdom o f God, which, with any true Jew. demands a king out o f David’s loins ruling over all, is not the dream o f Socialism. Indeed, the very idea o f God is set down as an encumbrance to the fulfillment o f the dream o f Karl Marx. Socialism pleads, as one o f the prime requi sites for its program, opposition to all racial hatreds. But, what about religious hatreds? And thè Jew is religion personified ! No one accuses the Socialist o f hating the man. But, how about hating the Jew? The memory of Socialistic France, going into convulsions over yielding a bit o f justice to Alfred Dreyfus, the Jew, is still fresh. Nor are we convinced that the Socialist, Upton Sinclair, was overburdened with undue love for Israel when he passed up the Old Testament as “ the ‘Holy Book,’ being full o f polygamy, slavery, rape and wholesale murder, committed by priests and rulers under direct orders from God” {Th e Profits o f Religion, p. 161). The Literary Digest (Nov. 10, 1934) informs us. that Lenin, Lucifer, and Satan are the names o f the three sons o f the Socialist, Governor Carrido Canabal, o f the state o f Tobasco, Mexico. Judging from all cognomens, their state in this life betokens what their state will be in the next ! A t least, in Mexico we find little to indicate that So cialism, once in the saddle, will exude much sympathy for the Jew ! In theory, racial antagonisms cannot exist in a Socialistic state. In practice, all depends upon how far religion enters in. Jewry may go Socialistic. But when it does, it prefers to seek “ among the herdmen o f Tekoa” ra ther than among the apostates o f Moscow, Berlin, ór Washington, for its prophets. C ommunism ? A nti -S emitic ! Dr. I. M. Rubinow, a Jew, addressing the Jewish Social Workers at a recent convention, said : You cannot approve Communism as it has found expression in Russia, and still speak in terms o f continu ity o f Jewish values. Communism spells the doom of all those values and those forces—religion, language, culture —without which there can be no Jewish life. Communism banishes Hebrew, Zion, arid Jehovah into the limbo o f ancient superstitions. Vain is the Communis tic boast that “ in Russia anti-Semitism is prohibited by law,” so long as a thousand Zionists languish in Russian dungeons for no other “ crime” than that o f being Zionists. Russia seeks to exterminate Judaism by swallowing and assimilating the Jew. W e predict a case o f painful indiges tion. Hosea, twenty-seven centuries ago, complained : "Is rael is swallowed up" (Hos. 8 :8 ). He may have been “ swallowed up.” He was not swallowed down ! During the ages, the Jew has been “ swallowed up" a thousand times. The dumiounded Gentiles, it seems, will never learn that the Jew is a positive emetic ! Jonah always comes "up" again—undigested and unassimilated— the miracle of the ages— the everlasting Jew ! : [Continued on page 120J
houses rifled, and the women [daughters o f Jerusalem] ravished” (Zech. 14:2). The destruction o f Jerusalem by Titus, the Roman? Y e s ! But far away—beyond those horrors— He saw the horrors o f “ the great tribulation,” when men shall “ deliver you [Jews] up to be afflicted, and shall kill you : and ye shall be hated o f all nations [not merely one nation— Rome] for my name’s sake” (Matt. 2 4 :9 ). The hour is coming wherein the wrath o f Satan is to reach its utmost bounds. “ The devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short tim e." In that hour, the church is “ caught up” and hidden away in her glorious chambers. Then, maddened because the church will have escaped his “ great wrath,” Satan, through his inspired forces o f flesh and blood, will persecute “ the woman [Israel] which brought forth the man child” (Rev. 12:12, 13). I f the anti-Semitic tides o f hate now rising all over the world are due to the fact that “ the devil . . . . knoweth that he hath but a short time,” then— Hallelujah! S ocialism ? A nti -S emitic ! [Some differentiate, and talk o f “ Christian Socialism.” Patrick visited a zoo. Eyeing a huge giraffe from head to foot, he shook his head, and walked away, muttering, “ Bedad, there ain’ t no such animal!" "Christian Socialist?” A h ! “ There ain’t no such ani mal !” Who ever stepped into a Socialist meeting and, for instance, heard the shed blood o f Christ proclaimed as a thing fundamental to any new birth? Socialism rests wholly upon the arm o f flesh. Its supreme purpose is to socialize banking and all the basic industries so as to pro duce a collective state d — //11 As for the Jew, embedded forever in his consciousness is the fact that within the immutable will o f God he be longs to “ a peculiar people [which God has chosen] unto himself, [to be] above all the nations that are upon the earth” (Deut. 14 :2 )— “ a kingdom o f priests, and a holy nation” (E x . 19:6 )— a “ people [that] shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations” (Num. 23: 9 ). He realizes that, for him, healing for racial enmities by assimilation is impossible. Time and time again, assim ilation has been attempted, and time and time again “ the national experience o f the ages is renewed: . . . He is a Jew . . . He remains a Jew . . . He cannot shake o ff the impress o f the experience o f seventy generations . . . Our assimilationist,” continues the Jew, Ludwig Lewisohn, in his book, Israel, “may never think a Jewish thought nor

Neches, Dean of the Western Jewish Insti tute, Los Angeles, in an article in the "Rosh Hashonah Edition" of the B'N A I B'RITH M ESSENG ER (September 7, 1934), writing under the cap tion, "The Jew Stands Firm," makes the following signifi cant statements: "The present situation of world Jewry and the prob lems that it is meeting with everywhere may be described in the words of Jeremiah as, 'A time of t r o u b l e unto Jacob.' . . . W e certainly live through all the pangs and anxieties f o r e t o l d by the rabbis, that which befall us at the time when the appear ance of the expected Messiah will be near (vid Sanhedrin 97b)."
