Origin T he origin of the human race with Adam and Eve is theologically im portant to Christianity. For this reason the Christian should have more than a passing interest in the fossils of early man that the scientist has uncovered. These have been found to fall into two groups: 1) those that have low-vaulted, massive skulls with large brow ridges and 2) those that have essentially modern skull structure. The former group in cludes such men as the Peking, Java and Neanderthal men. In the second group we find the Swanscombe, Fon- techevade and the Cro-Magnon men. It was early thought by the evolu tionist that the men of group one were more ancient and probably were the ancestors of the more modern type. But with the finding of the Swanscombe and Fontechevade skulls, which appear to be as ancient as many of those belonging to group one, some difficulties presented them selves. There is now a distinct pos sibility that these two types of men existed together from the earliest times. Some interesting finds, that threw some light on the relationship of these two groups of men, were made in the caves along the slopes of Mount Carmel in Palestine, where fossils were found that had charac teristics intermediate to those of Ne anderthal and the Cro-Magnon (mod em type) men. These remains have been explained by some as the result of interbreeding between the two groups of men. If this were so it would mean that the two did not be long to different species but that both were essentially man. For one of the characteristics that differentiate spe cies is the fact that different species

of Man usually cannot interbreed and pro duce fertile offspring. Thus it is dis tinctly possible that early man was reproductively a unit but divided into at least two races corresponding to the two groups described above. If this was so, then, these two races evidently were descended from Adam and Eve. As we have seen in our previous discussions of evolution, God created forms with the ability to vary. This characteristic is true of man as we can see by the variation exhibited by the various races today. There is no reason why these fossil men that are found were not produced within this God-given variation. If this interpre tation is true we solve the origin of these men, but it must in all fairness be pointed out that we are still left with some problems. For example, some of the remains have been dated to be as old as 500,000 years which pushes Adam and Evd back to a very early date and makes correlation with Biblical chronology very difficult. However, human paleontology is still a young field and as more informa tion is found it may be that some dates will be revised downward. A l ready the date for Java man has been revised from 1,000,000 years to 500,- 000 years old. Such revisions will help to bridge the gap. Then too, from the Biblical side recent studies have, shown that the date, of 4,000 B.C. for Adam and Eve was too re cent. Many present day fundamental scholars admit that Adam and Eve probably were much older. Thus we see that as far as fossil men are concerned more recent dis coveries have brought the evidence closer to what one would expect on a creation scheme. END.

★ ★ If thou canst not make thyself such a one as thou wouldst, how canst thou expect to have another in all things to thy liking. We would willingly have others perfect, and yet we amend not our own faults. We would have others exactly corrected, and will not be corrected ourselves. The liberty of others displeaseth us, and yet we will not have our desires denied. Thus it appears how seldom we weigh our neighbors in the same balance with ourselves. — Thomas a Kempis. ★ ★
