Program 6 Issue 10

Welcome to Segra Park, home of the Columbia Fireflies!

We want to thank you for choosing to join us for some exciting Columbia Fireflies baseball and lots of fun here at Segra Park! We have the greatest fans in Minor League Baseball, and without each and every one of you we wouldn’t be able to create this amazing atmosphere at every Fireflies game. The 2021 season gave us the opportunity to be one of the first sports venues to bring people back together coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic, and we were ecstatic to welcome fans back to Segra Park after a long break. It also marked our first season with a new Major League affiliate in the Kansas City Royals. Records were broken, memories were made, and we all enjoyed the opportunity to get back together as Fireflies fans. In 2022 we are excited to get back to what we hope will be a much more normal season. We will get back to what we do best with lots of fun on-field promotions, fireworks, great food and drinks and much more at every Fireflies game. As if that weren’t enough, we are even going to fire a man out of a cannon on July 23 and you will NOT want to miss out on that! We hope that you will enjoy your time at the ballpark and please be sure to let us know how we can improve your experience for your next trip to Segra Park. You probably saw on your way into the ballpark that there is a lot of construction and activity going on around us. Segra Park sits at the center of the BullStreet District which is a 181-acre redevelopment project that will help create a vibrant community in the heart of our state capital. In the past two years the district has welcomed Starbucks and REI providing the first of many retail pieces of the development. Merrill Gardens is a senior living facility that provides residents with top notch amenities and easy access to Segra Park as well as the new Page Ellington Park, a 20-acre park that sits in the center of the BullStreet District. In addition, many more projects have just completed or are well underway. Two public parking garages with over 800 parking spaces are now nearly complete. The WestLawn project will provide ample office space on top of 14,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor. Directly across the street from Segra Park work is well underway on the Bennet at BullStreet which will provide the district with a 280,000 sq. ft. community with 269 luxury apartments and 45,000 sq. ft. of retail space. Finally, the historic Babcock building is in the middle of being converted into 208 apartments and the famous red cupola will be restored after being destroyed by a fire in September of 2020. All of this is happening in addition to multiple townhomes, office space, a church and event space already being occupied in the BullStreet District with another huge project set to begin soon as the University of South Carolina will be constructing a new $300 million Health Sciences campus in the BullStreet District. Since 2016 over 1.2 million fans have attended a Fireflies game and an additional 230,000+ have attended other events at Segra Park, and we are just getting started! The best is truly yet to come for the BullStreet District, the Columbia Fireflies and Segra Park and we hope that you will join us for the ride!

Thank you for joining us for a Columbia Fireflies game, and we hope that you will have a world class experience at Segra Park. Please come back and visit us again soon for another Fireflies game or one of the numerous events that are hosted at Segra Park every year. This ballpark was built by the community, for the community, and we can’t wait to welcome you back!

Columbia Fireflies Alumni Update By John Kocsis Jr.

The Fireflies have had a memorable year to say the least. We’ve seen River Town break the franchise record on-base streak set by Jeremy Vasquez during the 2018 season, we’ve seen the highest overall drafted player in the neon and navy to date and we’re in the midst of the most intense playoff hunt in franchise history. With 24 games remaining in the 2022 campaign, the Fireflies are three games back of the RiverDogs.

If that weren’t enough, the Fireflies play Charleston six more times this year. The Fireflies have never clinched a playoff berth. The team played their first season at Segra Park in 2016, snapping a 12-year drought where Columbia didn’t have baseball in its capital city. Prior to the drought, the Capital City Bombers played down the road at Capital City Stadium. Their final season (2004) the team tore up the competition, finishing 89-47 to clinch the playoffs before falling in the South Atlantic League Finals to the Hickory Crawdads, who were affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates at the time. The Fireflies have had a rich history of successful players in the short period of time they’ve played in Columbia, and this year has been a particularly successful year for Fireflies alumni to shine brightly. One once-in-a-lifetime moment that was recognized by a Fireflies player was when Juan Carlos Negret hit the first homer in this year’s MiLB Field of Dreams Game into the corn beyond the left field fence. If you build it, they will come, and the Fireflies single-season home run king will blast a home run at that ballpark. That was a cool feel-good moment for a Quad Cities team that has struggled to find success this season, but we’ve also seen a few former Fireflies get their first taste of the big leagues. First it was 2017 and 2019 RHP Colin Holderman, who broke through with the Mets May 15. The 6’7” 27-year-old was cruising through his first 15 Major League relief appearances in the Big Apple when he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates at the deadline for platoon designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach. Since becoming a Bucco, Holderman has been borderline unstoppable. In six games along the Allegheny, the former Fireflies pitcher has a 1-0 record to pair with a 1.08 ERA in 8.1 innings while holding opponents to a .185 average—just one point lower than his Major League average of .186 in 26 innings. In Pittsburgh, Holderman will have a chance to eat more innings and carve out a larger role in the bullpen in the coming seasons.

The other player to make his Major League debut this year was pretty special. Maikel Garcia became the first member of the Royals’ farm system to make his way from Columbia to the show. The 22-year-old played for the Fireflies last season and has bounced between the Majors and Omaha since making his debut July 15 in Toronto. In seven games at the big league level, Garcia has kept his contact-first mentality at the plate, going 7-for-20 with one double. Garcia has entered the conversation of regularly joining the talented, young infield that the Royals have.

While not yet at the Majors, young phenom, Ronnie Mauricio has been on an absolute tear this season with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. The shortstop has added some muscle, which has allowed him to add a lot of power while still in his early 20s. The Dominican native turned 21 the first week of the season and for the second straight year, he has launched 20 homers. This year, in 13 less games played than last year (95 in 2022 so far) he has clubbed 21 bombs while driving in 69 RBI. Last year, 100 of the 108 games Mauricio played were in Brooklyn in Advanced-A. Mauricio is on pace to play 100+ games for the thing-consecutive year, he has swiped a career-high 14 bases and has a chance to be named an Eastern League All-Star or even Player of the Year this season. He currently ranks 7th in homers and doubles in the circuit and has the second-most RBI in the Eastern League, trailing just Quincy Nieporte of the Erie Seawolves. Mauricio has 96 total hits, which is 30 shy of his career-high 126, which he had in 116 games in Columbia in 2019. One final update to add to the list is a player who has been in the Majors for a few years, but is now experiencing an incredible amount of success: Andres Gimenez. Gimenez became the first former Fireflies player to earn MLB All-Star honors this year for his work with the Cleveland Guardians. After getting the nod to start the game at second base, he made an incredible play behind the bag at second during the Summer Classic for fans to see just how talented he is. Gimenez has played a career-high 102 games this season for Cleveland and is hitting above .300 (.307) for the first time in his career since he was in the Dominican Summer League in 2016. He played 92 games for the Fireflies in 2017 (primarily at shortstop) and he hit .265 at the plate. The infielder has launched a career-high 12 homers this season. Gimenez has also been hailed as one of the most clutch players in baseball this season. He has 17 hits in late and close games this season, which is the sixth-most in the Majors. Andrew Benintendi leads the circuit with 20-such hits. There are certainly a lot of positive things going on for current and former Fireflies.
